Time machine keeps creating a new backup
My TM keeps saying it can't verify backup and needs to create a new one, not sure on the gap in between a new one being finished and the next but it's not long and it takes 2 days to create it so effectively I have no backup!!
It was working fine until the last readynas update for Lion, is it Lion or Readynas?
Any fixes or idea's please I am very concerned I have no backup! family photo's movies etc..

Then this might help: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,169.html
Else you need to allow TM to create a new backup as it suggests - boomishAspirantMany thanks sphardy thats great info a little deep into unix commands for me but I'll give it a go ! I'll have to wait another few hours for the back to finish again :)
- boomishAspirantOh my God this is so confusing please can someone help I have just spent the last hour trying to do the above fix but I can't even get past step 1 in these instructions on how to fix Time Machine, note I removed my name with quotation marks
http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,169.html
I open terminal and put in chflags -R nouchg /Volumes/ReadyNAS/"myname" office’s iMac.sparsebundle
chflags: /Volumes/ReadyNAS/"name": No such file or directory
chflags: "surname": No such file or directory
chflags: office’s: No such file or directory
chflags: iMac.sparsebundle: No such file or directory
sh-3.2#
I tried every conceivable different command but it won't work or does nothing.. this is stupid why do I have to do all this for a backup!!!I might well get rid of this and get a Time Capsule.. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou need to escape the space e.g. using a "\".
It's a Lion issue so you'd probably have same probs using a TC. - boomishAspirant

Sorry i don't understand what space and where to put the back slash I'm following that link which says
Sorry don't know much about terminal commands.

"
From the command line
chflags -R nouchg /Volumes/{name of your network share}/{name of}.sparsebundle
This may take a little while.
Now type
hdiutil attach -nomount -noverify -noautofsck /Volumes/{name of your network share/{name of}.sparsebundle
You will then see something like
/dev/diskx Apple_partition_scheme
/dev/diskxs1 Apple_partition_map
/dev/diskxs2 Apple_HFSX
Where x is the disk id for the external disk. You are interested in the one labeled Apple_HFSX or Apple_HFS. It might be 2, 3, 4 or higher.
At this point, I have found that the filesystem check is already happening. You can check for activity by tail’ing the fsck_hfs.log
"
etc
etc - sphardy1ApprenticePlease note that "censoring" error messages like this makes it much harder to help you
The clearly error states: "chflags: /Volumes/ReadyNAS/"name": No such file or directory"
So you are not entering the sparsebundle name correctly, however we don't know the name. It appears you have called it something like: "Fred Smith office’s iMac.sparsebundle"
The use of space and punctuation characters in the name is causing the issue - when working from the commandline you need to make it clear, for example, if a space is a separator between parameters, or part of the name.
You can try enclosing the name in double quotes, or you can 'escape' the special characters as follows:
Fred\ Smith\ office\’s\ iMac.sparsebundle
If neither of these 2 options work, then you're going to have to not be shy and show exactly what the sparsebundle name is, preferably by copying and pasting (ie don't type it into post and so potentially introduce errors) - boomishAspirantMany thanks once again for the reply sphardy, yes your right there are spaces and it is exactly as you say my name is exactly spelt as - Fred Smith office’s iMac.sparesebundle
I tried with double quotes and the backslash and spaces, but terminal either says it can't be found or just sits' there doing nothing???
sorry but can you type exactly what I am supposed to type?
wow I can't even get past this first line of this insane fix, thats if it even works. I found this also http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic ... 71&t=55166
Has this got anything to do with it?
Thanks again for all your help I am so paranoid about loosing everything, I best get another drive and make an image but the the whole point of having the ReadyNAS so it's 2 disks cloning everything means it's safe! - sphardy1Apprentice

Based on the provided info, I already did. Check the name for double spaces or other hard to see anomalies. Perhaps try TAB key completion - type the first few letters of the Name and then press TAB which should complete the nameI found this also viewtopic.php?f=71&t=55166

No
the whole point of having the ReadyNAS so it's 2 disks cloning everything means it's safe!
The whole point of the "2 disks cloning" is to protect your data in the event of a disk failure - nothing more - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I wish that were true, but regrettably its not.boomish wrote: ...the whole point of having the ReadyNAS so it's 2 disks cloning everything means it's safe!
The cloning lowers the odds of data loss, and increases availability (you can still access your data if one drive fails). But there are many ways that you can still lose your data - lots of sad stories in the forum from people who thought RAID meant they didn't need backups. Some of these ways include (a) failure of the ReadyNAS itself, (b) failure of both drives (which is more common than you might think), (c) human error, (d) theft, fire, flood or similar disaster. - boomishAspirant

Thanks again sphardy and stephen for the replies, well I give up then, I tried everything and spent so long trying to fix this, I just tried all over again, spent an hour typing every possible combination, I did a google trying to find exactly what I am supposed to type in if my sparse bundle is called Fred Smith office’s iMac.sparsebundle but as I said either Terminal does nothing or says it can't find the volume. Are there any Terminal experts here that can tell me exactly why or again what exactly to type in so I can try this process as listed here? am I supposed to leave the little brackets?
