TimeMachine on ReadyNAS Duo with RAIDiator 4.1.12
I was running Time Machine with no problems on a ReadyNAS Duo running what I think was RAIDiator 4.1.8. I updated to RAIDiator 4.1.12 and now the Mac no longer sees it as a Time Machine server. I've tried rebooting the Mac and the ReadyNAS and tried turning Time Machine on the ReadyNAS on and off to no avail.
Anyone successfully running Time Machine using that version of RAIDiator with a Mac running Mac OS X 10.8.4?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHve you tried turning off Bonjour and AFP as well, then turning them and Time Machine back on?
- amck1AspirantI have exactly the same problem. I have tried turning bonjour off and AFP off and on but I still get this error message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/ReadyNAS/......./MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
I'd be very pleased to hear from anyone who's found a solution. Thanks. - amck1AspirantThe problem's got worse. Rolled back to RAIDiator 4.1.10 and now get the same error, ie, my Mac can no longer access the backup on the NAS. Very frustrating as it worked perfectly before the firmware upgrade and subsequent roll back.
- hungerApprenticeI've tried turning AFP, Bonjour, and Time Machine all off and back on again. It still doesn't work. Very frustrating.
- PaddyNoAspirantI've never tried to use Time Machine before. But I'm owning now a Mac and would like to backup my machine.
I have this effect: In the settings of Time Machine, the Mac can see ReadyNAS as a volume and is always reporting it as "available".
However, if the backup starts, he reports the error "The backup-volume is not available".
Is this issue still pending or did you find a solution in the meantime?
Rgds, Paddy. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you try 4.1.13 beta do you still have this issue?: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222
- PaddyNoAspirant@mdgm: Thanks for the hint. I'm now not quite sure if I should try it with the beta 4.1.13 or not...
...because I think that I've found the solution:
- because I'm using also Windows PCs, CIFS protocol was already enabled on DUO
- activating TM is enabling AFP itself, but TM application is apparently using the smb/CIFS address instead of afp
- this means that the volume itself seems to be available, but as soon as data should be written, it breaks and the volume is not available anymore
- I did some tests enabling/disabling CIFS and AFP and browsing for available volumes.
- Finally, TM works now fine. But I had to disable CIFS before the first setup of TM. So TM is using the AFP address.
- I enabled CIFS afterwards again. However, I can't say that it will conflict with AFP again or not. Let's wait for the next few backups... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTM uses AFP not CIFS, though I guess it's possible there is a bug with Bonjour advertisements when CIFS is disabled.
- PaddyNoAspirantHi mdgm
Yes, I thought it too, but I set up a 2nd MacBook for Time Machine with "my" procedure and it works perfectly using my workaround.
Again: if you have CIFS enabled during the setup of TM, the wrong address is used. The backup will never run...
Solution: disable CIFS, set up TM on the Mac, run the first backup, enable CIFS again. - ig_88AspirantInteresting. Not exactly the same problem, but I've also noticed that if I reboot the ReadyNAS I always have to clear and then recheck the Bonjour box to allow TM to find the ReadyNAS as a backup destination. I don't think this is a problem that was introduced with 4.1.12 - I was seeing this behavior with 4.1.9. One of my TM boxes is connected to the ReadyNAS with a switch so a router is not involved. I don't run CIFS but for as long as I can remember, I've seen CIFS advertised from the ReadyNAS even though I don't even have it enabled.
