UltraNas6: Slow read/fast write after upgrade HD (2TB-->3TB)
I have logged a support case for my problem, but maybe someone on this formum knows a solution.
I have a UltraNas 6 with Firmware is 4.2.19 and I have a Laptop with a SSD HD.
When I copy a file from my Laptop to the ReadyNas, I get speeds around 75 - 85 MB / s, which is very good.
When I copy a file from my NAS to my laptop, I get speeds around 15 - 20 MB /s. This is very BAD.
When I copy a file from my PC to my Laptop I get speeds around 112 MB / s, which is very good - this means this network connection is OK.
When I place my NAS at the same Network connection as my PC and I copy from the NAS to my laptop the speed is still around 15 - 20 MB/s. So there must be a problem with the NAS because this network connection is testet ok when connected to my PC.
In my NAS I have 3 x 3 TB HD from hitachi (Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 - they are in the netgear hardware list). I have a gigabit network swith (HP ProCurve 1810G - 24 GE -- also in the netgear hardware list) and I have Jumbo frames enabled on the switch and on the NAS.
There are no Error/warnings on the NAS and switch.
When I disable Jumbo Frames on the switch and NAS and copy a file from my PC to my laptop, I get still speeds around 112 MB /s.
When I copy a file from my NAS to my laptop the speed drops again to 15-20 MB/s (jumbo frames are still disabled).
When I copy a file from my Laptop to my Nas, the copy is still around 80 MB / s (jumbo frames are still disabled).
So Jumbo frames have no influence.
I can remember that this NAS was very fast for reading and writing in the past. But at that time I had 4 x 2 TB HD''s (Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 - also on the netgear hardware list).
After the replacement of the 2TB disks by 3 TB disks (I replaced them 1 by 1 - and had to wait some hours before each rebuild was ready), the problems started.
If there is a way that I can go back to 4 x 2 TB without losing my data or connectivity, I ''m willing to try that.
But if that results in better reading speed, we have a big problem because those 3 TB disks were not cheap while they are on the Netgear Hardware List.
At this moment this NAS is not usable for my business network. I connect with 3 - 5 PC/Laptops to this NAS and it''s too slow.
All tests are done with only 1 laptop connected to the NAS.
Thank you

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSo wait you had 4x2TB disks and now you have 3x3TB disks in the NAS?
What is the volume status under Volumes > Volume Settings in Frontview?
Have you tried a direct-connection?: http://sphardy.com/web/directconnect
Is your switch running the latest firmware? Have you tried enabling/disabling flow control? - bart_bcit_beAspirantThank you for the information.
Yes, I had 4 x 2 TB HD's and now 4 x 3 TB HD's.
I have also applied the latest firmaware of my switch (shame on me that I didn't checked this before).
The volume status in frontview is OK. All green and no Errors/warnings.
Now I'm having the following situation:
- Copy from NAS to laptop --> 75 - 85 MB / s (Yes!!)
- Copy from Laptop to NAS --> 10 - 15 MB / s (Damn ...)
When I use a direct cable (cross-over) I have:
- Copy from NAS to laptop --> +/- 95 MB / s
- Copy from Laptop to NAS --> +/- 12.5 MB / s
I als tried to enable Flow Control on the switch (on the laptop it's enabled) and this is the result for a copy over the network
- Copy from NAS to laptop --> +/- 85 - 95 MB / s
- Copy from Laptop to NAS --> +/- 12.5 MB / s
Additional info:
- on the NAS writing cache for HD's are on
- on the NAS datajournals are off
If you have additional tips, they are welcome! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOpen a tech support case (http://www.ReadyNAS.com/support). Edit thread title (I.e. Subject of first post in thread) to include your case number.
- bart_bcit_beAspirantThank you for the info. I had already a case running, but the comments on this forum are much faster then the responses I'm getting on the case (none so far).
