Unable to join ADS when netbios name has underscore

Hello,

we have a new ReadyNas 3138 with Firmware 6.9.2

Setup was smooth and now we try to integrate the users with our existing AD.

The problem we are facing is, that the nebios name is always is marked red and the "Apply" isn't doing anything.

Our netbios domain name includes a underscore, which IS allowed in MS networks.

The FQDN is very different, but does not seem to be the trouble.

NetBIOS Domain Name: XXXX_DO

FQDN: mail-i.xxxx.xx

As soon as I remove the _ from the NetBIOS Domain Name the field/label is no longer red and when I click "Apply" it tries to apply, but of course then fails.

Any ideas how I can join our ADS with such a naming?

BTW: We know that neither the NetBIOS nor the ADS FQDN match the current best practices, but this is a very very old domain, dating back from NT 3.1 days

Netgear used to allow _ in their hostnames, but a couple of releases ago they changed their software to be compliant with IETF RFC 1123 (published 1989), which does not allow that character.

As far as I know there is no workaround.

But it's in the Netbios Domain name, not in the host names.

And the RFC isn't relevant for Microsoft products anyway, they had their own "standards" in the past.

The fqdn is valid and rfc 1123 compliant.

I hear you.  Note I don't work for Netgear either.

But at the moment I think your only option is to change your netbios name to remove the underscore.  I don't know of any workaround.
