    1. Well on ARM it's a U-Boot not a BIOS. The U-Boot environment tells the NAS where to look for the kernel etc. on the flash, then during the boot process it switches to booting off the disks.

    2, 3 and 4. You can brick your system messing around with this. You shouldn't need to make any changes to this. You may find sites like natisbad.org provide helpful information for you.
