updates for nti shadow?

My ready nas duo came with this software with my luck all the updates windows 7 is coming out with my copy of nti shadow seems to be having issues like thinking my nas is not up and warning me till I open nti and let it refresh and it seems like its "not responding" many times and I've had to terminate it when this happens.

I'd like to eliminate possible bugs but when I first bought the device this version was not updateable.

Any ideas

Thanks

  • NTI Shadow V3.x that came with your Duo is not compatible with Windows 7. Netgear does provide an upgrade path to Shadow V4.x or Memeo Backup. Check the following link for info to upgrade to Memeo. I was not able to find the upgrade link for NTI Shadow.

In any event, I'm unimpressed with either and recommend you look at another backup solution.

    Here's a few:

Quickshadow (written by a forum member) - Both free and paid versions available - http://www.quicklytech.com
Syncback Pro - My favorite. Its accurate, fast and reliable. Plus for home users a single purchase allows install on up to 5 PC's you own. - http://www.2brightsparks.com
Cobian Backup - free, reliable, semi-fast. Lacks restore functionality. http://www.cobiansoft.com
  • It looks like I can update to nti shadow 4 for 9.99 (plus presumably shipping if cd copy) as its an upgrade from netgear hardware . I think most who use it would enjoy the dual "bi-directional backup as listed below in the code box. For that price thats an easy gimmi vs 34$ for a full licence (I think). I might try to let you know how it goes unless someones got a better 10$ upgrade to something else.

Shadow 4 enables automatic, continuous sharing and backup of photo, music, data, and video files to virtually any attached storage device and computers on your network with a drive letter.

    New features in Shadow 4:

Two-Way Shadow (bi-directional sync) – any changes made to the source or destination will be reflected in the destination or the source respectively. This keeps the source and the destination in sync with each other.
Capacity alert - lets you set an alert threshold for when your destination drive is becoming full.
Ninja Protection for USB storage – Ninja allows you to easily access and share commonly used data on the public partition, while simultaneously restrict and hide access to confidential data and the private partition of your drive.
New user interface with more graphical displays

    Syncback Pro. Trust me!
  • The same NTI Shadow version that came originally with my product ReadyNas Duo, works perfectly in my Windows 7 64-bit
  • Apparently Netgear Help Desk are unaware of the incompatibility of NTI Shadow V3 and Windows 7 because mine is way flaky and the suggestion was to reinstall as some other program may have introduced instability.

But I'm looking at CrashPlan as that allows me to back up my PC to the ReadyNAS and to the cloud via a single, cost-effective app (about $120 per annum for unlimited cloud storage. Was using Mozy but their prices went up as storage capacity went down). Requires a bit of fussing around on the Windows 7 so CrashPlan can see the ReadyNAS and back up to it, but overall it should be a neater option because then I can safely centralize storage of my critical data on the ReadyNAS knowing that it's also going up the wire in case of theft, fire or meteor strike!
