Upgrade with 3TB disk
Hi all
I have a ReadyNas Duo v2 with a 1 tb disk. I have purchased a 3 TB disk to expand storage. Data protection is not that important to me, and ideally I would like 4 TB of storage.
My nas is set to run xraid 2. When installing the disk how much storage will I get, and is there a way to increase that without loosing the data allready on disk 1?
Thx in advance.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhen you install the second disk, you will still have 1 TB of storage.
To do what you want, you need to change over to flexraid, and set up each disk as its own data volume (e.g, "jbod", or 2 RAID-0 single disk volumes).
This will require you to do a factory reset, which will destroy your data, and also will require you to reinstall any add-ons, and reconfigure the NAS. After the reset, you have a 5-10 minute window to tell the v2 to use flexraid - you do that with the RAIDar application on the PC.
BTW, many people are quite shocked to discover that their "v2" is actually a v1. You might check this guide: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/
If you really have a v1, you won't be able to use the 3TB drive in it at all. - ChrisdkAspirantHi
Thx for your reply.
The disk is in and in the process of "recovery"??
Is there a way to keep my data and still use both disks as storage? I do not have the possibility to back up the data on the first disk and would hate to loose it.
Thx

Well, you will certainly lose it at some point if you don't have do backups. You should invest in that soon (USB drives are pretty inexpensive). Get a UPS for the NAS while you are at it.Chrisdk wrote: ...Is there a way to keep my data and still use both disks as storage? But you might have a way to backup your data with your existing disks. Put your new 3 TB disk in a PC temporarily, format it, copy the data from the NAS to the drive. If you have a USB drive enclosure that supports 3 TB,then that is another option.
After you have the data, do a reset just the 1 TB drive in place (choosing flexraid, with RAID-0 or JBOD). Then copy the data back.
The delete the partitions from the 3 TB drive, and hot-insert it onto the NAS. Add a new volume that uses the 2nd drive. - ChrisdkAspirantThank you for your reply.
I have purchased a USB/SATA-adaptor and can now install my 3TB in my laptop.
But how do I choose flexraid with raid-o og JBOD (and which is better).
And what is a "hot-insert"?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserRAID-0 for a single disk drive and JBOD are basically the same thing - different ReadyNAS use somewhat different terminology. If your NAS says "JBOD" then pick it.
The process is described in your user manual (which you can download from support.netgear.com).
A summary is:
-Factory reset with only the 1 TB drive in place
-within 10 minutes select flexraid using the RAIDar
-Then select RAID-0 or JBOD. It is very important not to select RAID-1.
-After the NAS comes up, reinstall any addons, and reconfigure it (recreating shares, etc).
-copy back the data from the 3 TB drive.
-put the 3 TB drive into the NAS while it is running
-create a second RAID-0/JBOD volume that uses the 3 TB drive.
Note that share names need to be unique to the system - you cannot have a "music" share on 1 TB drive and another "music" share on the 3 TB drive.
You can migrate shares from the 1 TB to the 3 TB drive by
-creating a share on the 3 TB using a temporary name
-using the dashboard backup facility to copy the data from the old share
-after that completes, delete the 1 TB share
-rename the 3TB share to the correct name. - ChrisdkAspirantThx - I will try that :-)
