I got there in the end!
For anyone else with the same problem (in my experience), I manually downloaded RAIDiator-x86-4.2.16 and did a Local firmware upload which worked after about 15 minutes. I then did the RAIDiator-x86-4.2.24 upload which also worked taking the same time. I only had 100GB data on the drive at the time.
Once this was done I replaced the standard HDDs with 3TB and then recovered the NAS from factory settings (which is fine with me).
