That doesn't necessarily mean the drive is fine. Do test it as I suggested. It will help to isolate the cause of the problem. Personally from the symptoms I'd suspect the USB disk is beginning to fail. Running SeaTools can confirm/eliminate this as being the problem. Run both short and long tests.

Under System > Performance have you enabled Fast USB Writes? If so, have you been safely unmounting the USB disk?
