USB HDD denied access
Hi
I have connected a USB drive formated in NTFS to my NAS. There are several folders on it which I uses with PLEX Server. I have ejected this device several times and also rebooted with the USB device being connected and everything works nice.
Nevertheless no way to create a folder or add any files to this HDD and this if I try to do this from my computer but also if I try to do this from the html NAS interface !!! Both were possible some days ago !!! I have checked the USB Network settings from the NAS html control interface and they seem to be correct - full access to everyone.
Thanks if you can tell me what to do to correct this blocking situation...

- RXLuminaryHave you tried using other PCs/laptops?
What is the current firmware on your NAS? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTry ejecting the drive and connecting it to a windows PC. If it asks to scan/fix, let it.
- desaivresaAspirantNAS version is 6.2.2
Have it already ejected then connected to a Seven PC and fixed
Will have it done another time if it can help but so far no amelioration
Alain - desaivresaAspirantAfter a full night of reparation the USB HDD is newly accessible while being connected to the NAS - good !
Question - According to you => Is it due to NTFS compatibility ?
and if yes
- should I move this HDD to FAT32 in order to get rid of this problem
- or keep it in NTFS and stop connecting it directly to my Computer running Windows Seven Pro
Thanks for your help

Alain - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt isn't because of NTFS compatibility. FAT32 wouldn't have helped (and FAT32 doesn't handle large files, so I personally don't use it).
I don't know exactly what happened in your case, but it is related to USB, not the file system. Linux support for USB drives isn't as good as Windows - you always need to be careful to remove the drive via the GUI before disconnecting it. And even if you do that, there still might be some times when the file system gets mildly corrupted (power failure for instance).
In any event, the symptom you saw (drive became read-only) almost always means that (one way or another) the USB drive was flagged as being in an inconsistent state (the disk volume's "dirty bit" was set). The NAS puts it into read-only mode because writing to the drive potentially would do more damage. Windows will offer to repair. Usually no harm results, but it is wise to have a backup the data on that drive. - ElPablo1AspirantI'm also having the same problem. Two USB disks from two different manufacturers that are successfully mounted at boot time become read-only during a backup. Both disks. At the same time. There's something going on with USB support. I have an RN516 with OS 6.2.2. Also, ever since 6.2.0-6.2.2 the readynas has been having communication problems with the UPS attached to the front port although that gets resolved within a minute or so.
- desaivresaAspirant:( I am facing the problem again this morning and this time without disconnecting the USB Drive from the NAS. I am not in front of a stable system...
- not possible to delete any files neither from the NAS html interface nor from my PC explorer
- not possible to add anything neither from the NAS html interface nor from my PC explorer
I am now afraid to have to wait for an additional 10 hours of HDD reparation !!! There shoudl really be a serious bug somewhere - How to know if I am right ? how to have someone from Netgear being aware of ? Even a workaround would be appreciated... I am really thinking using FAT32 even if because of that I will have to get rid of a few very big files... Am I the only one facing this problem ? it could really help to know that...
Here is what I do with this USB HDD => from time to time and from my PC file explorer I copy files to it through the network connection... not more not less. Yesterday it was working - not this morning... I am also using a copy tool that see the HDD this way smb://nas1/USB_HDD_6/Videos

Alain - desaivresaAspirantOne additional info => the reparation of the USB-HDD has been done on a Windows 8.1 computer this time and it took less than 1 minutes... Once plugged back on the NAS the access was good again.
Alain - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserFAT32 also has the same "dirty bit" flag on the volume, so I don't think it will help at all.
Personally I don't think setting up USB shares on the NAS is the best approach - it is better to have enough internal storage for your media. - ElPablo1AspirantIn case it helps anyone... I went back to 6.2.0 from 6.2.2 and all of the problems I was experiencing: USB HDD Read-only, UPS disconnecting, poor performance are all gone and things are back to normal.
