Very slow connection between NAS and IMAC
Hi all,
Any advice appreciated. First, my set up.
iMac <cat5> TP Link switch <cat5> Router (Thompson 585) <cat5> NAS
I have an iMac that was running OS10.5 and has now been upgraded to 10.6 with no difference.
I have a netgear duo with a 1TB disk (Seagate ST31000528AS).
I don't believe I have RAIDiator installed on the mac since I manage the NAS from my PC.
The issue is the connection speed between the NAS and iMac. I cannot stream a movie between the two and when I'm transferring files I'd estimate the speed to be about 1mbps. 6GB takes about 2 hours. That doesn't sound right to me.
Trying to stream the same movie file on my PC is absolutely fine. That is on the same connection apart from the last cat5 and the switch. Can anyone suggest why the connection is so slow? All help appreciated.
Chas.

- NeilFannAspirantHi,
And thanks for the advice which I shall certainly action. I'm not sure it's the whole story though because:
NAS > Switch > iMac
and
NAS > Router > Switch > PC
Works well.
NAS > Router > Switch > iMac
Doesn't. I'm minded that something in the router is the issue here. Upgrading to a gigabit network would be a very good thing but at the moment I'm getting a kilobit network not the megebit network I should...
Also - would a gigbit switch improve anything with the existing router in place? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes a gigabit switch should help with the existing router in place.
If your router needs upgrading you might find it simpler just to upgrade to a new router and discard the switch (that's if the router has enough ports). - I recommend upgrading your main router as well. It will make a big difference.
Remember, the slowest part of your network will set the pace for the rest of it.
