WD Red 8TB WD80EFZX - anyone install them yet?
Has anyone installed WD Red 8TB WD80EFZX drives yet? If so, any issues? I read a few reviews that said they ran hot, made more noise than other drives and had non-standard mounting holes. I have t...

On a side note, I noticed you can see the smart stats in the logs too.

Yes. Though with ssh, you know for certain that they are current.
Hopefully Netgear will follow up during 6.7.1 beta, and get this fixed.

I have gotten a response from Netgear, and confirmed the behavior in 6.7.1-T244 with some testing of my own.
Many drives won't respond to SMART queries during spindown, so Netgear stops SMART queries when the disks are spun down. When the disks are spun up, they are resumed (with about a 3 minute lag).
The UI blanks the temperature field during spindown, and also shows -1s for the SMART stats when you click on the disk icon (on the performance tab).
I think the web ui behavior can be improved - I want to see disk health even if the drive is spun down. I've posted a suggestion on that in the idea exchange here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Idea-Exchange-for-ReadyNAS/Show-last-SMART-stats-for-spun-down-disks/idi-p/1269350#M960

Wait, I'm a bit confused since I thought you ONLY witness this behavior on the 8TB WD drives? Would it be fair to say you didn't see this with the 6TB WD drives you also have installed? If so, I'd be surprised that the same manufacture changed the way they report smart stats just because you bought a larger hard drive. I may have missed it but where are you grabbing 6.7.1 from as I have yet to see an announcement for it.

I haven't used the 8tb WD Reds but I have these seagates since july 2016 and not had any issues so far.

6.7.1-T252 (beta 2) implemented one of these suggestions (caching the smart statistics so you can see them when the disk is spun down). :smileyhappy:
The temp on the performance tab will be blank in this case (it would be misleading if they showed a cached temp there). But you can see the smart status when you click on the drive icon.
There are other suggestions in my idea exchange post, hopefully Netgear will implement those too.

That makes sense or they could present the stats with a time timestamp so you know the last time it was read/polled. Does reading the SMART stats cause the drives to spin up which is why manufactures no longer report them during spin down? That said, I'm not sure how much real time SMART stats are necessary unless the drives are actively being used.
