Just my opinion here (I don't work for Netgear and have no inside information).
But my take on their strategy in recent years is that their goal was to consolidate everything on one OS - which is OS6. This reduces the software maintenance overhead, and hopefully will give them more capacity to develop new features. And I think its better for users also - 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 5.x variations created a lot of confusion and disk migration challenges.
Now that they've done that, we are seeing some platform upgrades (for instance the RN200 to the RN210). That likely will continue throughout the line, but even if a platform upgrade shows up for the RN500 series, I'd be shocked if OS6 upgrades were discontinued for the RN516.
FWIW, if it were my call, I'd introduce a 4-bay RN500 model before I refreshed the RN516.
