Why shouldn't I mix AFP and SMB protocols?

Hi

New here and this is my first post, so please forgive me if I missed anything obvious!

Looking at this article, http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23094/~/what-file-sharing-protocols-are-supported-by-readynas-os-6-storage-system%3F?cid=wmt_netgear_organic, for the AFP protocol it states "If only Mac OS X users access your storage system, enable this protocol. However, in a mixed Windows and Mac environment, NETGEAR recommends using SMB only." but there is no mention of why Netgear recommend using SMB only, does anyone know of any issues when mixing AFP and SMB on the same shares (ie Mac users connect using AFP and Windows users connect using SMB)?

We have been having issues with Mac users connecting using SMB (permissions lost, shares showing as empty when someone else makes a change etc) and are looking for alternativesto running SMB on the Mac machiens

Thanks very much

Graham
