Will adding a second disc erase all data?
Hi guys,
ignorance is a disease and I've got it bad today. I have a ReadyNAS Duo and am moving to a new computer. So I thought I'd put the hard drive from my old computer in my ReadyNAS so I could copy the data from there (thinking this works as network storage). The ReadyNAS however automatically started a RAID synchronisation and deleted all data without asking.
So my question is: Is all the data lost or is there a way to retrieve it?
And please hold off on the laughter, I know this was incredibly stupid
Thanks,
Oddgeir

- Yup. Resyncing will have deleted the existing data from the hard disk which was in your PC. Any data on the 1st disk of the DUO would have been copied over to the 2nd disk.
You should have done a backup. Of course, you could try to perform file recovery on the PC disk using a file recovery program.
I don't know how many files it would be able to retrieve.
A backup of the PC disk should have taken place beforehand. I hope that you did not have important data on the PC disk. - Oddgeir81AspirantThanks, that was what I suspected. No critical data, only old e-mails and a collection of files I can retrieve from elsewhere. I guess that's why I was so sloppy... I'll try doing a file recovery though and see if that works.
- A good file recovery program that you might wish to use is the following:
http://www.stellarinfo.com/linux-data-recovery.htm for linux systems (a commercial product).
OR
You can also try Ultimate Boot CD which is completely free (see http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/)
1. a. Simply boot your PC with a copy of Ultimate Boot Cd that you have burned
b. Make sure that you have placed your PC disk in a USB/Esata drive enclosure or disk caddy and is connected to your PC.
2. Select DDRescue from the list of applications
I hope this helps.
