Windows 8.1 machine can't see shares on RN104?

Is the Windows 8.1 network connection classified as private, with network discovery turned on? Are the windows system and the NAS in the same windows workgroup?

Also, have you tried using the NAS admin credentials?

On credentials generally, windows will present its logon credentials to the NAS by default. If the user name matches one configured on the NAS (for instance "admin") but the password doesn't match, then access is denied even if anonymous access is allowed.

Originally, no, the readynas was set to something else and the client to WORKGROUP. Have changed them both to WORKGROUP and still doesn't work

I have tried nas admin credentials, the cloud credentials, and no creds, and still doesn't work. I can ping the device and log into the web page OK, so network connectivity is fine. Just access via CIFS doesn't work :/

I have tested CIFS access with this machine at work and can access shares hosted on a Windows 2003 file server and a NetApp filer no problem. It just seems to be accessing the shares on the Readynas. However other devices (a mac) can access the shares... weird...

It is weird. I'm a windows 7 user, but did connect with no problems using Win 8. However, I no longer have that machine, and I haven't tried win 8.1.

You might try net use next.

"net use * /delete" to delete any existing connections

"net use T: \\nasname\sharename /user:admin" to mount a share using NAS admin credentials. You should get a password prompt.

Interestingly, I can do net use T: \\nasname\sharename /user:admin and it will mount the share.

But I cannot, under any circumstances, open Explorer and go to \\nasname\sharename or even \\nasname to browse the available shares.

Any idea why that might be? Mounting via net use is a workaround for now but is strange that it doesn't work via explorer...

It is strange.

Are you logging in with a microsoft account, or are you using the traditional local user name approach?

And you've checked the windows credential locker?

I am logging in with a Microsoft account.

I am having a lot of intermittent issues connecting to these shares. If I map a drive with NET USE it seems to work for that session but then after a reboot the drive will not reconnect, it just errors saying cannot find the path.

It is definitely a windows 8.1 issue as I can access via mac and windows 7 devices :/

Have you checked the credentials for the NAS in the windows credential locker? If there are none, then add them.

I am having similar issues but with a different perspective.

I have two NAS systems
a) NV+V2 hostname = nas1
b) RN104 hostname = nas2

na21 has a number of shares (share1, share2, share3...) set up with userX having read/write access.
nas2 has a number of shares (share1,share2, share3...) set up with userX having read/write access (note that in the RN104 the shares are created under /data)

From a windows 8 system (work domain): domain\userA (not userX)
On the NV+V2 - I am able to use the windows file explorer to browse \\nas1 and it lists all the shares... so far so good as long as I type the correct password for userX.
using the windows file explorer to browse \\nas1\share1, it successfully shows the content of the folders and allows me to access the files.

On the RN104 - I am able to use the windows file explorer to browse \\nas2 and it lists all the shares.
using the file explorer to browse \\nas2\share1, i keep getting this error:

\\nas2\share1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The handle is invalid.

So when i try to use net use L: \\nas2\share1 it successfully maps to the drive and i am able to connect using the file explorer to view the files.
I prefer not to keep mapping drives manually using the cmd prompt. I have tried to go to the credential store -> control panel -> user accounts -> Windows credentials to edit/correct but does not seem to help much. Works nicely on the NV+v2 browsing using the windows file explorer. Does not work very well with the RN104 with file browsing.

Anyone has seen this? is there any specific (maybe security or access related) setting on the RN104 that can be tweaked so that I can browse the shares contents just like the NV+V2?

Are you using the same username/password in the credentials manager as you are using when you map the drive letter to \\nas2\share1?
