X6 Boot Issue - NV+ Transition - Case#21873210

Have a redaynas X6 w/ 4x1.5T Seagates; working fine for many years (except the occasional drive fail/replace). Fw is up to date (updated a few months back). In August had problems accessing the NAS. Found it in a state of trying to boot. Power cycled and after many tries to boot - it finally did, took a day plus and the RAID sync finished (any instances of starting over at xx% complete - xx% a variable #). Shortly thereafter, system went down again. Then it will not boot at all. Flashing power light (fast); hear a click and what sounds like disk activity; power light slows but eventually it goes fast again; and the cycle continues.

Tried a few items from the Forums here - booting w/ no drives made no difference. Booting w/ 1 of the 4 drives removed (tried all in sequence) also made no difference. Contacted support - case # in the header - and they also worked with me on a few items (memory tests all fine, etc...). Bottom line, X6 has given up the ghost and my last back-up is woefully out of date. Directed that an NV+ (ver 1) would be compatible with the drives - assuming that all is Ok with them. Just managed to get a new v1 NV+ off Ebay and it arrived tonight. Plan to spark it up and figure out how to get the FW version that it is running - although told that it does not matter.

So before I swap the 4 drives over to the NV+, wanted to ping the group here for any words of wisdom or from any similar experiences.

Thanks for any input,
-john

Use a spare disk (must not be from your array) to verify the NV+ is working and update the firmware on it to the version you were running on the X6 or newer.

Then follow the migration procedure in the FAQ
  • Thanks - have a new Seagate that was my spare. Was not sure if the NV+ would boot diskless or not. Migration looks straight forward after getting the NV+ to the latest version.

Of course before moving your array across you would remove the spare disk from the NV+
  • Wanted to post the resolution to this query. Updated the FW to the latest version as suggested by mgdm - that was straight forward to do with the new NV+ out of the box and spare drive. Then transferred my 4 disks from my dead X6 over to the NV+ and crossed my fingers. System booted and went through it's checks; spent most of the night syncing and awoke in the morning to a Sync Complete - all is ready - email. Everything as it was before the X6 gave up the ghost, except running on the new Hw platform.

Have closed out the case that was opened and hope that I get 8 yrs out of this NAS as I did the first. Thanks to NG support and mgdm for their advise and working to resolve this.

Now i need to get an updated Back-up completed and ensure it runs more regularly than before...
