Transition from ReadyNAS Duo v1 to ReadyNAS 104
I'm considering upgrading my Duo to a newer model. I have 2x1TB drives currently in the Duo, and would prefer to not have to but new drives just yet.
Can I just take these 2 drives and put them into, say, a 104, 214, or 314, without losing any data.

Your current ReadyNAS is a Sparc-based OS4 NAS while the RN104 is an OS6 NAS. You cannot use the same disk and expect the data be intact. If you can still access the data, back up first. You can still use the same disks with RN104 but it won't keep the data, it needs to format the disks since these disks were used on a different platform and OS.
Although you can try using the same disks after formatting them, there is no guarantee that they will work as they should with the RN104 if they are not listed on the HCL. It is recommended to check HCL first when using ReadyNAS systems so you know which disks to get.

Any strategies for copying data across the two, keeping user ownerships and permissions?

ThanksYou want to align UIDs and GIDs, and then use the web ui backup (Rsync) to transfer data. I recommend doing that share by share.
If all the files in each share should have a common owner, then simply do the rsync, and then set the owner/group for the share after it is copied.
You can re-purpose the NV+ as a backup device for at least some files on the RN104 - which is what I've done with mine.

As StephenB mentioned, you can use RSYNC protocol. See How do I back up data from a RAIDiator 4 system to a ReadyNAS OS 6 system? article. However, this will not backup the permissions.

If it doesn't, then I'd say that's a bug.
- Grand. I can probably set the owner and permissions, assuming I can get root on the nas.
How much data do yo have on the Duo, and what configuration do you have for the two disks e.g. xraid?
of course you need to either back up that data or get an additional disk for the new NAS. Maybe you have a PC with sufficient space available?
- 49% of 1.8TB used, so around 900GB. 2x2TB drives mirrored (xraid).
It sounded like this is your only copy of the data, but do you have a backup or a PC with space for one?
- Backup is the 2nd disc in the nas. I may be able to copy to a PC and then to the new nas. Slow and messy, though. Was hoping for a better solution when going between versions.
(In fact, I can now look at other devices before buying a new one as the solution would be the same).

If you want to re-use the existing disks from your Duo, I suggesting:
- backup to another device, e.g. a PC or external disk
- move the existing disks from the Duo to new NAS
- prepare and configure new NAS (with old drives, wiping all data in the process)
- restore backup to new NAS
I'm not being critical over your reliance on RAID as the backup, but many things can (and do) go wrong with this strategy. Look at a thread from this week where the NAS hardware develops a fault, making it hard to extract your data, let alone the many ways to achieve data corruption.
I do recommend a separate backup of your entire NAS before moving to a new one, with the added benefit that you can keep that backup for the future also.
