x64 firmware installed on x86 hardware

Hi,

I recently purchased an old Netgear ReadyNAS 2100 v1 (RNRX4000) to create an extra off-site backup.

I discovered it is possible to update this to the latest firmware, and not to stuck with the legacy  4.2.x version. Unfortunately I missed a very important note, “These models do not work with OS6, because they have 32bit processors, and OS6 is only 64bit.” …

So, I managed to install the x64 firmware upgrade to an x86 system. Shortly I realised my mistake, and tried to revert this without any success so far.

The NAS boots after powered on blinks the LEDs, but will stuck and I cannot reach it. Not visible in RAIDiator, cannot ping the NICs, however I can get in to the boot menu. I have tried to reset it from there, no luck.

I followed this instructions for the upgrade:

http://netgear.nas-central.org/wiki/OS6_on_Legacy_x86

Is there any way to restore the previous firmware from the boot menu?

Thanks for your help.

Lev

    Hi Lewad,

    Welcome to the Community!

To be honest, there is no way in reverting back to the previous firmware on the boot menu. Let us wait patiently for any recommendations from any community members who experienced the same issue.

Since you still have to use the OS4.2 USB recovery mode on a legacy unit running OS6 and you can still get to the boot menu on your system, I believe that the OS6 upgrade doesn't touch the boot loader.  If that's true, then USB recovery should still work.  See RAIDiator-4-2-USB-Recovery-Tool.  Note that the NASes can be picky about the USB device you use.  So if it doesn't work the first time, don't give up, try another brand (unless somebody more knowlegable says this can never work).

There is a 4-pin serial port on the back of the 2100.  I suspect that, like the NVX, it's a TTL Level RS-232 port, not full RS-232 levels like on some units, but you should look at the voltages before you take that as gospel.  If you Google ReadyNAS Serial Port, you'll see some info on connecting to it.  But how to use it to recover the flash, I have no idea.
