NETGEAR is aware of a growing number of phone and online scams. To learn how to stay safe click here.
Two requests:
- Add an option to toggle whether the router advertises its own IP address as a DNS server. Advanced users don't need routerlogin.net.
- Allow a private IP address to be specified as a DNS server. This currently doesn't work because the DNS relay occurs after NAT. A user has to disable the DHCP server on the router in order to use their own DNS server.

I own a NetGear R8500 and wanted to map a url to a local IP for a small web server that I have running on my local network and was hugely disappointed to find my $600AUD router isn't capable of doing this from the settings, even though the router does this for myrouterlogin.net or whatever the url is.
Coming to see that so many people have DNS problems has made me realise a few of the slowdown issues I have had previously are probably caused by some of these issues.
I shouldn't need to have to set up yet another device to have this work. I bought this router because it was marketed as a high end unit and I expected it to have all the bells and whistles of other brands.
I may have these options with open source firmware but why should I have to install them, when these settings should be available out of the box?
If I am just overlooking something and this is possible, PLEASE can someone let me know. I don't want to set up my own DNS server just to have this as an option.

+1
Can someone (from Netgear) just answer and tell if this is going to happen or not?
This is a basic DD-WRT feature... So please, just add this to your high end devices.

Reviewed and abandoned? Can't be difficult to add some either whatever.local or a custom domain and allow a simple Web UI for defining A and PTR records. dnsmasq would even allow to automatically define DNS entries based on the DHCP requested host name and the IPv4 address assigned.
Similar, the routers should allow the advanced users to configure own local DNS server IP addresses, e.g. on the same LAN, so advanced security appliances can be put in place, too.
AbhayB please - the community members are waiting for years.

Other than the Orbi ideas, this was the top up-voted idea... and yet only "reviewed". :robotsad:
I'm down voting Netgear with my money.
Never buying a Netgear product again -- they've already lost business on the non-Netgear routers, switches, wifi-extenders, powerline adaptors, etc that I've recently purchased and recommended for others.

Agreed. I really thought this would be something they correct/fix quickly. Once in need any new communication equipment, I will avoid Netgear. Very disappointed in this router.

The performance of the internal DNS is worse than many of the external DNS so I really would like to switch but without adding a new server to the network. Please add this so I can continue with the use of the Orbi rather than doing a wholesale replacement.

I have been encountering nothing but limitations and compulsions with the Nighthawk series. Someone is making pathetic design assumptions that dont work in the real world. Too bad I found out only after several months. I have asked all customers to only use their Netgear routers as second or backup devices. Until this issue is fixed, Netgear only gets to be a switch.
- dpippengerOnlookerI would 't trust them to properly implement their switches. the mistakes they have made and refuse to fix with basic items on their Orbi kit has convinced me they quite literally don't understand networking. This sounds like hyperbole... but it's not and as a networking professional with 25 years of experience working in large networking companies I feel qualified to make this judgement. I sold my Netgear switch along with my Orbi.

I would like these options as well on my XR500 router. I would much rather the chosen dns would distribute the dns to all clients then use a relay.
