Hi,
I have a lot of devices attached to my router. I try to keep things organized so I can see what is attached in the Attached Devices screen.
Can Netgear please add the option to upload a custom icon so one can upload an icon given the current icon set is pretty outdated it seems.
Either that or can you please add icons for:
Amazon Echo
Amazon Echo Dot
Amazon Fire
Amazon Fire Stick
Ring Doorbell
Roku
Ring Chime
Logitech Harmony
Samsung SmartThings
At the least, can you please add generic icons for:
Thermostats
Doorbells
Smart Assistants (Amazon Echo, Google Home, etc)

I don't know if this thread is still open, nor if the topic is still under "Engineering Investigation" but I'll give it a go.
It's 2022 and I still see the same tired, old device types and icons. We don't need that much detail - just generics:
Cellphone
Tablet
Laptop
Desktop
A/V Receiver (or whatever)
Speaker
Bulb/Lamp
Robot Vac
Router
Thermostat
Mini-routers or extenders (for individual items)
Etc.
Having all the Mac types and different models of phones is a waste and too much work for the programmers to keep introducing new ones. Generics would require much less maintenance - just add some new types once in a while. On the other hand, I guess it's not a lot of maintenance after all since the list hasn't changed since I first looked at it years ago.....

Nice summation and excellent suggestion UnStableSanity!
Thread was started in 2017.
2020. With my NightHawk R8000 (exellent product BTW) I'm still choosing between a Slingbox, an iPhone 6....

"Get with the **bleeping** program NETGEAR and yes I created an account just to make my voice heard, thank you very much!
This basic request for additional device icons is past due and your team has been aware of it since 2017. You should be ashamed of yourselves for not resolving such a simple request. This is a QoL request that would take less than a day to create. Then add it to your next firmware deployment package.
If your lacking in the graphics department go out to Shutterstock or some other graphics library website and acquire the necessary icons you need for a minimal charge. Doctor them up to give it the NetGear polish, if you can't do this I can get my 6 year old to do it. @phands gave your engineers a roadmap pertaining to adding images and modifying the json file so this shouldn't be difficult task and push out to the masses.
Also whoever is in charge of maintaining your Nighthawk app, coach them on how to "WOW" customers. Now for the individual that manages that team fire their **bleep** and get a competent manager that can delegate(that's what managers do) these little requests that matter most to your end-users, the customers, the same people that keep your lights on, allowing you to take your fancy vacations, yeah those people.
On a side note the Nighthawk RAX120 is an awesome piece of hardware! Kudos for that.
That's my 2 cents and hopefully, we can get this request fulfilled by 2025.
Cheers and have an uber awesome day!"

Since it appears there is a kludge (hack, work around, third party solution...), would anyone like to start a repository of great icons to use?

Hi,
This is a pretty safe change. The first time through, I got the syntax of the device type table.json file wrong (misplaced that "," at the end of the second-last line. All that happened was that the "attached devices" page didn't render correctly. but everything else was working fine. I didn't have to reboot the router - just refresh the page.
There's no programming required, and no new software to install on the router.
On windows 10, you may have to enable incoming SSH for the scp command to copy the icon files up tp the router.... https://winscp.net/eng/docs/guide_windows_openssh_server
You'll also have to enableWindows 10 telnet (I think it's off by default)..... https://www.rootusers.com/how-to-enable-the-telnet-client-in-windows-10
You'll have to use vi or vim to edit the json file, and have a Winows 10 login and password for the scp command.
I'm happy to help.

Thanks for the update.
Sounds like you've got it figured out!
Statrted looking into your instructions and I'm hesistant, thinking I'd mess up the router.
Command prompt I'm comfortable with.
But no programming experience or software that might be needed (?) to do this editing.
Would need a walk through for a Window 10 PC.
