While it's great that we can designate our own DNS servers on the routers, instead of just using the ones provided by our ISPs, it would be even better if you could integrate DNS-over-TLS and/or DNS-over-HTTPS into the firmware. This would allow us to query DNS servers (e.g., Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 or Google's 8.8.8.8) without our ISPs being able to monitor our requests, giving us confidentiality from our ISPs and anyone along the path between our LAN and the DNS server; without our requests being able to be changed, ensuring integrity in the replies; and without having to run a separate service or piece of hardware on our networks for this purpose, increasing availability, at least from a certain perspective, as not everyone has the resources or ability to run their own local DNS server capable of using one of these two standards.17KViews82likes33CommentsAttached Device Icons
Hi, I have a lot of devices attached to my router. I try to keep things organized so I can see what is attached in the Attached Devices screen. Can Netgear please add the option to upload a custom icon so one can upload an icon given the current icon set is pretty outdated it seems. Either that or can you please add icons for: Amazon Echo Amazon Echo Dot Amazon Fire Amazon Fire Stick Ring Doorbell Roku Ring Chime Logitech Harmony Samsung SmartThings At the least, can you please add generic icons for: Thermostats Doorbells Smart Assistants (Amazon Echo, Google Home, etc)57KViews61likes40CommentsNext Orbi Firmware must allow guests to see each other but not access Lan
The Orbi Guest Network settings has checkbox option for, "Allow guests to see each other and access my local network". These TWO options must be separated as other routers do. Others before me have pointed out how having these two options treated as one is a security flaw, and defeats the whole point of having a GUEST network. Guests may want to play games with other, use their wireless printer or connect their phones to Chromecast. They should be be able to do this without having access to the entire main network. I hope that the next firmware remedies this.31KViews32likes11CommentsBlock/Allow Schedule Via Mac Addresses
Dear Netgear, 1. The mac address control (block/allow) ability is pretty weak. I really need the ability to schedule device level access, preferrably by mac address, via a time and day schedule. 2. Additionally, we need override buttons on the Genie apps to immidiately block and release internet access via the router. Push a button, it disables access. Push it again, it resumes access. Furthermore, an override button if (and only if) mac address scheduled controls have been enabled, as described above. Push a button, it overrrides the schedule. Push it again, the schedule resumes. Nothing is perfect, right? I mean, what if my pregnant wife wakes up at 3:04am and wants to Google 'pickles and ice cream' and her shiny new iPhone is blocked via schedule? Bad husband! It easy.... just copy paste the code from one of your other packages. I mean, we're talkng about the grandaddy Netgear Tri-Band Nighthawk R8500 four antenna monster here aren't we? We need souped up software to go along with that drag racing wifi router. How about RGB LEDs for those antenna tips while we're at it? (JK) MikeFeature Request: Block or allow individual devices based on time schedule
I have an R7500 Nighthawk router that works beautifully. But one feature I miss is the ability to block individual devices based on a time schedule. There is a feature to block ALL devices on a time schedule, but not individual devices. Please consider adding that feature. For example, I want to block my 2 kids Ipods between 9pm and 7am on school nights, and 10pm and 7am on weekends, and allow all other devices. Unless I'm missing something, this is not currently possible460KViews71likes55CommentsR8000 Firmware
Per NetGear social media, we are supposed to suggest the below idea here. My idea, as crazy as it sounds, is that Netgear continue to support their R8000 devices. I know, sounds insane but hear me out. People spent hundreds of dollars on a product featuring the "latest tri-band wifi" technology. Now instead of leaving them hanging with a big security exploit for two months, device issues and a feature release stall, Netgear should develop a new robust firmware. Ideally it would be one that wouldn't encourage them to go out and try questionable 3rd party firmwares. That means, it should be competitive (feature wise) with those 3rd parties while fixing ongoing issues highlighted in the forums. Benefits: 1. Happy customers who don't feel like they wasted money and are not stranded with a reletively up to date tech, that lacks manufacture support, features and security. 2. See #1 above. I think it deserves reiteration. Facts 1. product saw less than 18 months of firmware releases and developer support. 2. Nearly 9 months have past since the last firmware update (as of 8/31/2016). 3. June 2016: security notice suggested disabling of features due to security exploit. 4. 2 month later, June 2016 security exploit is still unpatched, leaving customers exposed. 5. There are no Nighthawk products listed on the NetGear EoL page, including the R8000. 6. The product is still available through online and big-box retailers.125KViews7likes14CommentsNighthawk R7000 Traffic Meter Monthly Limit Increase
Please update the Traffic Meter feature for the Nighthawk R7000 to have an increased Monthly Limit that can account into the Tbytes. Comcast as an ISP has began to implement data caps at 1024Mb which equates to 1048576Mbytes but the Monthly Limit field only allows me to enter 104857Mbytes, missing the last digit which is significantly less than the data cap. Given that Comcast is monitoring the traffic it should be available to impose limits and monitor traffic independent of Comcast. It is very important this feature be added. Currently running V1.0.7.10_1.2.3 firmware. This was mentioned in the forums and it was suggested that this be submitted at this location in that post. See below; https://community.netgear.com/t5/VPN-Firewalls/Bugfix-Request-Increase-maximum-monthly-limit-for-Traffic/m-p/1185320#M6496 Original Post "This in regards to the Traffic Meter monitoring function of the SRX5308 VPN Firewall. However this would apply to any device in Netgear's product lineup that monitors the amount of IP traffic per month. Currently the traffic meter can set a monthly traffic limit of up to a maximum of 256000 MB (~250 GB). However, this is insufficient for those who are using Comcast as an ISP where the limit is set to 1 Terabyte (1024 Gb). Request that the montly traffic limit setting be adjustable in the Terabyte range." Reply "I advise you to post your concern as feature request in the Idea Exchange Board for Business here. Be reminded that the community members who will give kudos to your idea will help as the development team will be reviewing the post that has the most kudos and it might be considered to be added on the future functionality of the product."60KViews8likes20CommentsFeature Request- Alexa skill support for English India language as Echo devices launched in India
Feature Request: 1. Enable support for English India language in Netgear alexa skill so users from India could also use netgear routers with alexa as Echo devices are officially launched in India. 2. In the Netgear downloader, https links are not added and most of the websites are now switching to https links even for downloads.12KViews3likes8CommentsEnable Telnet on R7000
Hi, I tried a lot of ways to enable telnet service without success....Searching in the community, I saw that there are others people interested of this function on the R7000 AC1900 Smart WiFi Router Nighthawk. These are some examples of posts in the communty: 1) Enabling telnet on R7000 2) Telnet not working on latest firmware (V1.0.9.10_1.2.21) 3) How to enable telnet on this router? Please, can you release a FW with this feature? Thanks!13KViews0likes3CommentsCan we have specific DNS setting for WAN and 4G
