Unrealistic and impractical. It isn't simply a case of replacing chip A with chip B.
Most environmental activists acknowledge that some devices are not amenable to repair and upgrade, but they also insist that suppliers have effective recycling schemes. In this way, nothing goes to landfill, and valuable materials are recovered and reused.
In Europe we have the WEEE directive:
Waste electronic equipment - Environment - European Commission
If you live in a backward country that does not support similar schemes, lobby for it, and insist that suppliers provide the same services, even if the law does not demand it.
