Although automatic firmware updates should probably be the default, there should be a method (easily accessible in the firmware settings) to disable firmware auto-updates.
The foregoing would allow those experiencing issues with the latest firmware to remain on an earlier version.

Last night was the second time this weekend orbi auto updated and stop working -- requiring me to reflash my firmware on the router and two satellites. Come on Netgear!!! Fix the auto update issue and then get the rest. We can survive a bit longer on the final fix if our routers aren't randomly updating and stop working.

This task is a high priority if you ask me.

After the latest update broke communication with my thermostat for some unknown reason, I had to muck about with telnet to try to block further updates. Really should give customer a cleaner way to disable updates. If it's working for us, I don't understand why Netgear insists on possibly breaking it by forcing updates.
Every other device I own let’s me opt in to auto updates. The last release broke HomeKit while I was out of town. It also stopped my Sonos ‘white noise generation’ at 3AM, severely not cool when the kids all got up.
I would love an official opt out option. Give me all of the reminders you feel is needed, like Apple and Sony do, but let me decide the appropriate time to update, please.
I specifically discounted Eero due to their auto update policy.

After more consideration, I think disabling automatic firmware updates should be (remain) possible, but should only be available through like the debug page, as it should be the exception, not the rule. Normal users shouldn't even really have the option of doing it, at least not easily, because this is a consumer-grade device meant to be set-it-and-forget-it style, which is how most consumers use most networking equipment. Configure it once, and then never mess with it again until either something breaks, or their needs change. The average consumer should have automatic firmware updates.
For more advanced users, using many/all of the features, where updates may break some features, disabling, at least temporarily, automatic updates would be beneficial (I'd suggest a downgrade-and-skip-a-version setting, or something like that). But, really, the solution is for Netgear to do a better job testing the firmware before pushing it. Disabling auto-updates is just a stopgap measure. Nobody (or at least very few) would complain about automatic updates if they didn't break features, so the real problem is breaking features, and the real solution is sufficient testing to prevent broken features. If there are too many hardware variants in the Orbi line, then give better support to fewer models, or make them more uniform, so that one update works on multiple models.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. PLEASE allow us to disable auto updates!

This needs to be implementer a.s.a.p.
Since the new FW usually doesn't work as they should we must be able to stop the router to auto update
2.1.4.10 has been a disaster and I need to revert to older FW all the time due to the auto update.
- lohki82Guide2.1.4.10 has been a disaster! My system has been rock solid for a few months but now I can't keep it up a single day on 2.1.4.10. I went back to 2.1.2.18 but stupid auto update strikes. STOP IT

Yes please enable manual update (disable auto). My router keeps getting messed up with auto-updates!
- 1OldDudeOnlookerThe last two Netgear Orbi firmware updates have very effectively broken my home network. As I read through the Orbi forums, I find that these are effectively alpha releases. Netgear does not have the right to break my home network at their discretion nor essentially involuntarily enroll me as an alpha or beta tester. I destroyed the shipping material for this capable hardware that is being crippled by an inept development staff or I would return the system to Amazon. Give users an option to disable automatic updates!
