Hurricane Electric guide to enable IPv6 6rd on NG router
Guide to setting up and configuring external IPv6 protocols on a NETHEAR router using Hurricane Electric's IPv6 tunneling services.
Guide to setting up and configuring external IPv6 protocols on a NETHEAR router using Hurricane Electric's IPv6 tunneling services.
NETGEAR Orbi or Nighthawk Router systems (no double NAT)
First thing: On the NETGEAR router, under Advanced tab/Setup/WAN Setup:
- Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection
- Enable Respond to PING on Internet Port
- Set NAT Filtering to OPEN.
- Apply the setting.
These should help avoid seeing any Error messages on the Hurricane Electrics Create Tunnel page when they go to scan the WAN side of the NG router. ICMP Protocol 41 is used by HE to scan the router from there side and is required for this setup process.
NOTE: Be sure to re-enable the 3 settings changes above back to there original settings after the HE IPv6 tunnel has been setup.
Setup an account at HE or Log in to existing HE account. https://www.tunnelbroker.net
Select Create Regular Tunnel
Copy and paste the WAN IP address seen for “You are viewing from” into the “IPv4 Endpoint (Your side)” empty box on the Create New Tunnel page. The WAN IP address is what HE detects from the WAN port on the router. You can see this as well on the routers web page under Advanced Tab/Internet. Should be the same address.
NOTE: If HE can detect the WAN IP address at the router, the web page will display a green status and that there is a possible available address that can be configured.
Select the nearest available service (Region/City) from where you live at from the “Available Tunnel Servers” list.
Select the “Create Tunnel” button at the bottom of the page.
If successful, the Tunnel Details page will be displayed on your HE accounts page.
The following GREEN arrow marked sections and values will be needed:
NOTE: Under the Routed IPv6 Prefix sections, If the Routed /48: option is displayed as Assign /48, select Assign button link to reveal the actual /48: IPv6 address string here that will be needed.
On the NG routers IPv6 configuration page:
- Select 6rd for the Internet Connection Type drop down menu.
- 6rd Prefix: Input the Routed /48: 6rd Prefix values into the router seen on HE’s Tunnel Details page under Routed IPv6 Prefixes section. For any last segment that doesn’t have any value(::) use a single 0 (zero) value in the routers IPv6 input field box.
- 6rd Prefix Length: Use 48.
- 6rd IPv4 Border Relay Address: Input the Server IPv4 Address into the router seen on HE’s IPv6 Tunnel Endpoints section. ###.###.###.###
- 6rd IPv4 Address Mask Length: Use 32
- IPv6 Domain Name Server (DNS) Address: Set to Get Automatically from ISP. Or try Use These DNS servers. You’ll need IPv6 DNS address values here. Custom IPv6 DNS can be used here, i.e. Cloudfare, Quad9 or Google.
- LAN Setup: Use Auto Config.
- IPv6 Filtering: Secured
- Select the Green Apply Button.
IPv6 web page on the NG router should look like this after it’s been applied:
NOTE: Blank boxes seen here are values removed for security. Actual values will need to be filled in based on what is provided by HE for your user account and IPv6 tunnel.
Check the IPv6 configuration on the network ethernet adapter on the PC. The IPv6 Address seen there should have same IPv6 Prefix as seen on the routers IPv6 configuration page that comes from your HE IPv6 Tunnel Details page.
IPv6 Test Verification
Using one of the following sites in a web browser after Hurricane Electric IPv6 has been configure will ensure that the configuration is working:
IPv6 testing sites:
Once HE IPv6 has been setup on your NG router, On the NG router, under Advanced tab/Setup/WAN Setup:
- Enable Port Scan and DoS Protection
- Disable Respond to PING on Internet Port
- Set NAT Filtering to Secure.
- Apply the setting.
Only one configuration created on HEs web site can be used for one NG Router. You can have up to 5 free different configurations from HE.
Enjoy.
