Perhaps that's because the CM1000 is a modem, not a
modem+wireless-router, and, as such, it has no wireless-network
capability.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the Product Data Sheet or the User Manual.
Read.

Then, start looking for a wireless router to use with your CM1000, or
a combined modem+router to replace it.

General advice: Don't begin a conversation with "so".  It requires an
antecedent.

I don't know.  Are you trying to connect them at the same time?  How?

Even if you connect only one device to the modem, you may need to
restart the modem (and then the device) when you change the device which
is connected to the modem.

Connecting a router to the modem would make it easier to use multiple
devices.  The modem would see only the router, not a bunch of different
devices.  A router can deal better with multiple client devices.

Your modem connects a device to your ISP.  That device gets its IP
address and other information from your ISP at that time.  The ISP also
gets an identity (MAC address) from the device which you connected.  At
that point, the ISP thinks that its job is done.

If you disconnect that device from your modem, and connect a
different device to the modem, then your ISP may not allow the different
device to connect, because it's a different device (with a different MAC
address).  Many cable-TV ISPs are strict about connecting to different
devices.  If you restart the modem, you may get another chance.

If you get a router, and connect that to the modem, you may have
similar trouble.  The router will be seen as a still different device.
Again, restarting the modem may help.  In some cases, you may need to
call your ISP and provide the MAC address of the router.  (Many routers
can be configured to provide the MAC address from some other device
instead of its own, and that feature can also work around a problem like
this.)

When you stop connecting different devices to your modem, this
trouble should stop.
