DOS Attacks - Cause Router to Reset

My modem/router(firmware version is V2.02.08 and model is N600(C3700-100NAS)) randomly resets when it gets pinged with various DOS attacks like

'DoS attack: Ping Of Death'

'DoS attack: Teardrop or derivative'

'DoS attack: Illegal Fragments'

I see these in the log in the 'Netgear Genie' (admin console site) and these dos attack occurrences usually show a 'count' of 1 or at most 4.

The source and target ip addresses are always non-US ip addresses with various ports.

What can I do to stop the resets or prevent these dos attacks from happening?

  • You should enable DoS attack blocking from your router firewall.

Ok, I've unchecked the 'Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection' box on the setup page.  Factory settings defaulted this to being checked - why?

After unchecking 'Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection', I'm now I'm seeing this in the logs 'DoS attack: TCP- or UDP-based Port Scan'.  Again the source and target ip addresses are non-US various countries.

It hasn't caused a reboot yet but what is this?  My ISP is Time Warner.
