It doesn't outright block sites

I have seen the exact same behavior for the past 3 weeks on my RBR50 mesh router (firmware v2.7.24). This is beyond frustrating - it doesn't outright block sites but it is failing to resolve the host names into IP addresses.  I have Circle 1st Gen enabled on my router (and have for years) ... if I switch the devices to "unmanaged" then it can start resolving the IP addresses ... when I switch it back to managed they become unresolvable again.  Sample CNAMEs that can't resolve (at times) are:

www.microsoft365.com

https://www.justplayingdiscgolf.com/
https://contexto.me/

When a domain name can't be resolved, then none of the devices on my network can resolve it (mobile or laptop).  Then, mysterious 30 min, 2 hours or 8 hours later that host name will begin to be resolvable again.

I have a support ticket opened with Circle but I don't have much hope there (they will say it's a Netgear problem I am sure).

I tried the reset sequence listed earlier in this thread last night and it seemed to clear up the issues happening then, but again this morning now there are new CNAMEs which can't be resolved.

Bug in the firmware?  Issue with the Circle services which say whether or not to allow access to a URL?  Corruption of the local cache in the router?

Any suggestions for other things I can try in order to get this fixed?  The internet really isn't workable for my family currently unless I turn off Circle (which I am not willing to do with teenagers and young kids) - and since I WFH this is extremely disruptive.

UPDATE - add another CNAME to the list which started failing this morning:  http://orbilogin.com/ ... yeah, this makes debugging fun 😞

Re: It doesn't outright block sites

Well since the Orbi 50 series is EoL, I presume Circle maybe as well. It had it's run and I guess time for something else. Hope the other system works out for you.

Good Luck.

Re: It doesn't outright block sites

Not sure how it happened, but my reply to another thread on the topic somehow become it's own thread, and I can no longer edit the posting to provide appropriate context (an admin maybe did this?)

Please see this thread which describes exactly the same issue as I am having:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Circle-Smart-Parental-Controls/very-little-internet-accessibility-w...

I have tried the router and modem reset suggested in that thread but it didn't fix things for very long.

I don't know if this is a buggy firmware or bad DNS services but something changed which has broken the reliability of my router - HELP!

Re: It doesn't outright block sites

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. https://kb.netgear.com/22697/How-do-I-install-my-NETGEAR-router-using-the-router-web-interface
Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200.
https://kb.netgear.com/24089/How-do-I-specify-the-pool-of-IP-addresses-assigned-by-my-Nighthawk-rout...
I would power OFF the ISP modem for 1 minute. Factory reset the router and power it off. Power ON the ISP modem and let it sync. Then power ON the router and walk thru the setup wizard again using a wired PC and a web browser.
Press the back reset button for 15 seconds then release.

Or use the ERASE button on the routers web page to factory reset the router:

Re: It doesn't outright block sites

@FURRYe38 - thank you very much for weighing in on my issue with these very clear instructions.  I really appreciate all of the help you provide to people on this board!

I did not do a complete Factory Reset following my FW upgrade, as that would destroy all Circle setting (back-up / restore of Circle settings has long been broken for Circle 1st gen on Orbi and they have never fixed it).

As it is abundantly clear that Netgear really, really wants to kill off Circle 1st Gen in their products in favor of their monthly parental controls subscription, I decided it was futile to try go down the path of trying to fix Circle 1st Gen in my Orbi.

I went ahead and purchased a Bark Home parental controls unit and I completely turned off Circle.  Not the outcome I had hoped for since I had purchased my RBR50 (and replaced it with the same unit a couple of times) specifically for the built-in Circle features, but I was pretty sure I had no chance of getting functionality and stability out of Circle long term (I did reach out to Circle for help, and like for so many other people, they referred me to Netgear Support, so that was a dead end as well).

It is a pity, as I had recommended the RBR50 to many of my friends over the years because of built-in Circle which didn't require ongoing subscription fees.  Going forward, if Bark Home works out for me I will be recommending that instead.
