Will I see QoS working as expected after upgrade from DG834Gv5 to D7000 Nighthawk ?

Hi all,

I hard tried the see QoS working on my old Netgear DG834Gv5 modem/router with no luck.

My test case: Web Server (A) cable connected to LAN port1, Windows PC (B) cable connected to LAN port 2, WiFi switched off.

When (B) is idle (A) answers quickly to external (internet) requests (http pages).

When (B) is uploading a file to a public server (A) becomes unresponsive, in truth (A) receives the requests and tries to answer but the upstream bandwith is completely saturated by (B) and the responses don't reach the network before the clients timeout.

I set up QoS giving high priority to (A) and low priority to (B) but the behaviour was the same. Why ?

A firmware bug ? Router (hardware) performance limits reached ?

The same test was run using two other modem/router (other brands) obtaining the same results.

Did somebody experience the same issues as me ?

Now I'm close to buy a new modern router (a Netgear D7000 Nighthawk) but I would like to be sure that it will solve my problem ...

Thanks to all will join this thread.

What is your UP load speed?

0.5 Mbits/sec ... the same as my upstream bandwidth capacity.

I would save your money 512KB is not much to work with.

Ok, Searay. I could ask to my ISP to improve my upstream bandwidth up to 1Mb/sec. Do you think it would be enough to get QoS working ?  With my actual DG834Gv5 ?

QOS is not your answer, in my opinion.

I really appreciate your opinion Searay. Let me know why QoS is not my answer, please.

What do you think should be the right approach for sharing an internet connection between a high priority device and a low priority one ?

Re: Will I see QoS working as expected after upgrade from DG834Gv5 to D7000 Nighthawk ?

I'm a little confused.
For getting QoS to work (as I knew) we have to set the real connection upload and download speeds, but those speeds float (they depend on the ISP service level, network congestion and so on), if we set the right speeds now, may be that they will be wrong in two minutes. How can it work ?
I'm not able to understand how it is possible to control downstream priority. Does it means that I drop or slow down low priority incoming packets, telling ISP to resend them or wait, because I could be waiting for high priority packets ? If there aren't any high priority incoming packets or my ISP keep them waiting in the same queue as low priority packets I decrease the downstream bandwith for nothing. Is it correct ?
Last consideration.  Why is it necessary to declare the upstream bandwidth ? I think it could be possible to use as much upstream bandwidth as available, time by time, stopping low priority packets if there are high priority packets ready to be sent. In other words high priority packets have simply to "overtake" low priority packets without any bandwidth reservation.
Hoping not to be boring ...

QOS will not replace a lack of bandwidth. We can beat this around till the cows come home and at the end of the day your 512kb is never going to be enough to satisfy your expectations.
