Configure New DSL Modem

I have ordered through Amazon a NETGEAR High-Speed Broadband DSL Modem (DM200-100NAS) for my CenturyLink DSL network.  Please send to me or direct me to any information regarding configuration.  My old Actiontec C1000A modem is still up and running (but barely), so I can copy and save that configuration if it will help.

Thank you,

Ken Traynham

That could mean any of many things, so capturing the
DSL/Internet-related settings from your old modem+router could be
helpful.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.

The "Automatic Internet Setup" ("installation assistant", "wizard")
feature might puzzle out the proper low-level DSL settings, but you'll
need to provide any PPPoE credentials, and perhaps other parameters
(VLANID?).

CenturyLink should be able to supply any required information, even
if they won't actually help you configure the DM200.

   ... is actually a modem+(wireless)router.  The DM200 is also not a
simple modem; it includes a rudimentary router, but no wireless
capability, so you might want to investigate a wireless router to use
with it.  (In the short term, it might be possible to configure the
C1000A as a wireless access point, which would provide some wireless
capability with the DM200 acting as a modem+router.)

   Define "barely"?  Any specific complaints?

I'm impressed that you have tracked down supplies of the DM200. Netgear seems to be withdrawing from the DSL modem market. I had to resort to an "open box" source when I wanted a second one a year or so ago.

There's no easy way to transfer settings between modems. It is a manual process

Two things to do:

  • Get the settings that your ISP (CenturyLink?) specifies for your DSL service.
  • Check the configuration of your existing modem, using something like (Alt + Printscreen) grabs for the important pages.

Then, when you install the DM200, follow the Quick Start guide and the prompts.

Remember, out of the box, the DM200 provides limited "routering". Before you install it,  put it into modem only mode, unless you plan to recycle the old modem/router as a wireless access point (AP). In that case, the DM200 could act as the router.

As the C1000A is a modem/router, if you plan plan to reuse it you'll have to work out and what you want to do and how to do it. Rather than second guessing your intentions, I'll leave it to you to come back with further questions, if you have them.
