NETGEAR | CGD24G | How to assign IP addr based on Mac address

Hi Everyone,

I have Netgear CGD24G Cable modem gateway.

I'm running two virtual machines (running bridged networking) and I don't care what IP address gets assigned to them ...just as long as it remains the same ...forever.

I'm trying to figure out how to do this in the router configuration.

Under Advanced \ LAN IP , I see a DHCP Reservation Lease Info. I suspect I need to enter the MAC address of each machine into this area and then pick an ip address. When I do this, and select 'Add', nothing happens (no error, no entry added ) . Just nothing.

For example, here's the ip configuration of one of the VM's.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:8A:EE:8E
inet addr:192.168.0.14 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::20c:29ff:fe8a:ee8e/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:78810 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:73581 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:11578432 (11.0 MiB) TX bytes:92007922 (87.7 MiB)

I want this VM to always get 192.168.0.14 and never change.

If I enter the mac address (00:0C:29:8A:EE:8E ) under the DHCP Reservation Lease Info and enter the IP address that I always want for this particular machine ( 192.168.0.14 ) , then select Add, nothing happens.

Am I doing this right ?

My starting IP Address is 192.168.0.10 and ending is 192.168.0.20.

Just in case I'm including Gateway info:

Information
Standard Specification Compliant DOCSIS 2.0
Hardware Version c104
Software Version V4.4.8R073-RG
Cable MAC Address 30:46:9a:a4:29:56
Device MAC Address 30:46:9a:a4:29:57
Cable Modem Serial Number 1WL3097901D07
CM certificate Installed

Thanks. Any tips greatly appreciated!

Re: NETGEAR | CGD24G | How to assign IP addr based on Mac address

I cleared all of the DCHP leases, then picked an address (that wasn't being used ) ...192.168.0.17, then added the MAC address 00:0C:29:8A:EE:8E . After that, I restarted the network connection on the VM and then I got 192.168.0.17 assigned to it. I did the same steps to the other VM and that worked too. I rebooted both VM's and the IP addresses were assigned out correctly . Everything was running fine, then about 20 min later , my particular application stopped working. When I checked the IP address of the configuration mentioned above...it wasn't using 192.168.0.17 anymore. It was using 192.168.0.12. I'm trying to figure out how to retain the IP addresses. I'd rather DHCP client fail and not provide one at all rather than a changed IP address 😞 I don't see any other way to configure this in the router. I don't seem to recall having this much problem assigning a particular mac address to an IP address in other (non netgear) router software. Wonder if I need some sort of firmware update ? Seems broken to me 😞

Thank you for the reply.
Yes, the cable modem I have is provided by the Road Runner cable service.

I'll investigate purchasing my own. Again, thanks for the reply

I would suggest to get simple cable modem and buy your choice of wireless router .
