Configure Router for VPN

Hi everyone,

 

I understand this is a pretty old router.

 

I want to premise that I don't know a lot about vpn server setup on this router. I tried to install a IPSEC/L2TP with preshared key and configure it so that I can remotely connect from a client PC in order to access the remote server/network and close off port 3389 which is a security risk for remote administration.

 

I used the wizard, to configure ipsec/l then l2tp, selected client mode.

When I try to connect I get an error:

The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer

 

I used the Windows 10 built in vpn ikev2/l2tp with preshared key client selected MSCHAPv2, but it does not work.

 

Can someone please explain to me how to setup a proper vpn server on this unit? I do not want to use PPTP and I could not get ssl vpn to work due to not being able to connect securely with IE.

 

Is the self-signed certificate my problem? Or outdated ssl security?
