Advice required on what I need to buy
Hi all I've been tasked with distributing broadband across a campus and have a few questions regarding switching... Another department has installed a 1000mb BT broadband bearer within a WAN ...

Hi chrish1984,
I understand the distances now (I got confused before). I did find a solution but we still need to get back to our original problem, qouted below:

I found the model M4100-12GF, this will be the switch under the core switch (if we can use a 1G port from the core switch). For the 4 other switch, I am suggesting models M4100-26G or M4100-50G. If there is no choice but to use the 10G, I'll see if I can find another solution and get back to you on that.
Thanks,

Hello chrish1984,
Given the length and cabling limitations, I believe 1Gb is the fastest we can go. You can choose from our wide range of smart gigabit swicthes (configurable models), it'll be able to help you manage and monitor network traffic.
Hope it helps

Thanks JohnRo you have been a massive help.
1 more question...!
The core switch I'm getting the broadband from only has a 10gb port configured for my use. If I procure a 1gb distribution switch, how will this connect to the 10gb port on the core switch?
Thanks

Hello chrish1984,
You're welcome!
Yes, we do have switches that can interact with 10GbE but I'll have to get some more information so I can give you the products you may need. I have listed my questions below:
1. Brand name and model of the core switch.
2. Does the core switch support SFP+ or does it use 10GbE RJ-45 connectors?
3. For the switch that will be connected to the core switch, how many ports do you need?
4. Are the OM1 cables multimode or single?
5. Is it really a 500m OM1 or does it have switches in every few hundred meters?
Please check this module that we have and see the distances that can be accomodated. So all in all, there is a slim chance of making it work without upgrading the cables.
Thanks,

Hi JohnRo
The core switch is a Cisco Catalyst 3850 24S there is a mixture of 1gb & 10GB SFP ports but only a 10gb port has been configured for my use.
The switch connected to it should have 24 port for future expansion.
The OM1 cable are multimode 62.5/125.
One on the LAN rooms is 500M away all one length of cable. Other LAN rooms are between 200 - 300m.
There is a very slim chance that the switches will work at 10gb. is it possible to use a 1gb sfb to connect to my new distribution switch from the core switches 10gb port or do you think it's worthwhile I get the ISP to activate a 1gb port on the core switch?
Kind regards
Chris Holley

Hi chrish1984,
At 500m with OM1 multimode cable speed will be less than 1GbE, the maximum distance of OM1 to use 1 GbE speed is 300M. You can refer to this article. Do you have a diagram on how the network will be setup? Is there a way to connect a switch 200-300m away from the core switch?
I'll look forward to your response.
Thanks,
