NMS300 external file server settings
Hello, I am asking for help setting up the external file server on NMS300. A previous post had all the same symptoms as myself but the post closed. When I try and test the connection to the external...

Hi johnrobertson12 ,
Welcome to community,
I tried it and it worked on NMS30 1.6.0.22.Please refer to my steps.
My configuration steps are as follows:
1. Created a folder in D disk root directory
2. Share the folder and select some user can "Read/Write". (For example "administrator")
3. Set configuration in the External File Server Setting (Please see attachment file)
4. Click "test" for test whether the folder can be accessed on NMS300(Please see attachment file).
PS:Suggest closing the firewall on the PC.

Thank you kevin_hong for your help. I have done this many times now with different credentials, still saying settings need checking, failed to connect to external server. I have had my colleagues double check the shares and paths also. One thing I did notice was you say you are using 1.6.0.22.....Im on 21 and couldnt find 22 as an option to download from Netgear support site. Or was it a typo?
Anyway, Im at a loss now, thank you again for your help.

Hi johnrobertson12 ,
I'am sorry i did not solve your problem and i do not think has anyething to do with the version,
For external server file, it's just a simple file share and access using username and password,
it is recommended that you can use capture packet tool (wireshark) to get packets and provide to me
find out why the access failed.
Thank you

Windows firewall on or off makes no difference, it shows like this capture this on Wireshark. I have tried the "external" server as another drive on PC, or as in the case of the capture, to another PC on my desk.
The question I have is, Is this using SMB1 protocol? Which we have blocked on our firewall. (A collegue of mine did temp allow SMB1 but this made no difference). The packets werent showing up on firewall which to be fair may not have as both PCs are on the same net segment.
Think I may lay this one to rest as everything points to the NMS itself, just a feature we cant use in our setup.
Thanks for your help though.
