Duo v2 & NV+ v2 Official iSCSI support in future release ?

Hi,
will the new arm based nas's get official iSCSI support in a future raidiator update?
Also does anybody have a timeframe for nfs support which I believe is forthcoming.
I couldn't see anything in the duo v2 manuals about jumbo frame support. Please confirm support of jumbo frames.

Thanks

Will have to wait and see what NetGear does. Do you already have a v2 device? If not and you need those features, I would suggest getting an Ultra which already supports both of those.

There is no Jumbo Frame support at this time, though with SSH access you might be able to enable it manually by editing /etc/network/interfaces. I don't know if the changes would stick or not and haven't tried this.

edit: Don't edit /etc/network/interfaces. Edit /etc/default/services. There is a line you can add that should enable jumbo frames: "JUMBO_FRAMES_eth0=1" (no quotes). An OS re-install should disable Jumbo Frames if this doesn't work.

Edit: should be JUMBO_FRAMES_eth0-1, I think. JUMBO_FRAMES_eth0=0 indicates that Jumbo Frames are disabled.
  • Thanks mdgm. I was hoping someone from NetGear/Readynas would be able to show a roadmap of what is planned for raidiator 5 on arm arch. Obviously the devs are working on the next version, etc. It'd be a nice selling point if we could see what is coming down the line or not. I had a look at the ultra as you suggested. I particurly liked

"We had initially thought iSCSI support was only important in a business environment. Well, we were proven wrong, and we now include iSCSI support on the Ultra." :-)

I didn't like 2TB max drives though or the higher power consumption. I think I'll try and hold off making a decision until I see what the next firmware release brings.
  • Not a lot new, if anything in 5.3.3. Had a look at some of the early adopter reviews on Newegg. Not good. Quote

"I spent over an hour with tech support only to hear him continually apologizing and confirming the firmware and software is incomplete and should not have been released."

Netgear don't appear to want to communicate with their customers. A roadmap for features after releasing beta quality firmware isn't too much to ask in the 21st century. All this stuff is already in the kernel so it is a matter of designing a web interface to control it. Netgear seem to have made a decision that cifs is good enough for 99% of users. Maybe they are right.

Thanks for trying mdgm. It looks like it will be some time before the raidiator 5 firmware is functional for anything but cifs. Pity, nice hardware.

pmcq, I would take issue with that quote attributed to a tech support rep.
Firstly I don't know the context in which it was given. A statement taken out of context becomes a pretext.
Secondly it's quite clear from the ReadyNAS comparison charts (http://www.readynas.com/?cat=49) what the feature set is.There are more features planned (one or two are even mentioned in the comparison chart!). There are more services coming.
Thirdly if you're not happy with the feature set, then get an Ultra like I suggested. It's more powerful and has the features you want.
Fourthly while I can understand some people being upset to find features from the Duo (v1) or NV+ (v1) not present in the early firmwares at least for the v2, iSCSI was never a feature of the Duo (v1) or NV+ (v1).
Fifthly, there is AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) not just CIFS. Of course if you don't have a Mac, then you have no use for AFP.
Sixthly it can be difficult to estimate how long it will take to add additional features. If you are familiar with the command line there are ways via SSH to activate some features reasonably easily.
  • Hi,
Really strange that you remove a good Jumbo Frame option.
I edited /etc/default/services with JUMBO_FRAME_eth0=1 and used/etc/init.d/networking restart (depreciated) simply because after ifdown there will be no ifup on a single ethernetport NAS.
This did not work but does gives me ' ifconfig: page allocation failure'.

    Any clues?

Does it still not work if you reboot the NAS?

I haven't tried this properly myself. It's best if you have an x86 ReadyNAS (e.g. NVX/Ultra/Pro) to compare with if you try to figure this one out. Also ensure you have an up to date backup.
