Missing files and folders ?

Hey Guys, Sorry for my level of tech know how but Id like help determining what has gone wrong and how to fix / recover my files. Ive no idea what has gone wrong. My NAS was fine yesterday. Both drives appear to be detectiable by the NAS and while windows can connect to my NAS Its not detecting anywhere near 50% of the files I had !

So where do we start ? What information would you need to assist me ?

If you are the original purchaser, then your best option is Netgear support - you can get per-incident paid support via my.netgear.com.  They would investigate, and if needed you'd need to escalate to a separate data recovery contract.

If you do need data recovery, it will be quite expensive.

Backups are needed even with RAID (as you unfortunately just discovered).

I am the origional purchaser but ive had the unit a number of years now and I doubt it will still be under warrenty. I did not have RAID setup so any failure of hardware if that is the case will have to be investigated in due course. Hopefully by not having raid makes resolving this simplet but possiabally increases the likely hood of data loss. What I need is information on what I should do first ! What are the most likely or common design failures of this product so that i can investigate myself. Could it be the file database needs rebuilding like ive read in other posts ? I dont want to start this process for fear of making things worse however as ive read that some things I could try to fix things can be very unforgiving and totally screw things up. Im also unable to pay for paid support as Im currently unemployed so !!!! Im living on a wing and a prayer. Any and all help is appreciated.

I wasn't thinking warranty support. But if you are the original purchaser you can still get paid support from Netgear.  The last US prices I heard for that was $75 per incident (though data recovery starts at ~$200).

Let's step back a bit though, and confirm what NAS you have.  You indicate a v2, but the labels are confusing and many v1 owners mistakenly think they have a v2. Can you read this article, and then confirm your NAS model?

Did you have one or two disks installed?  If two, did you have two volumes?

Also how are you accessing the files?  Windows File Explorer or some other way?
