ReadyNas Ultra 6 fan header

Morning all,

The system fan has been flaky for a while in one of my Ultra 6 boxes so I ordered a Noctua fan based on reading around the forum.

Of course I hadn't appreciated the fan I had was 3 pin and the Noctua one is four pin.

To avoid making any fatal mistakes in swapping the pins around on the new fan, I thought I'd check if anyone can share the header pinouts on the ultra 6.

I believe that you can fit a 4 pin to 3 I assume I will just lose the signal wire.

But I also know that assume makes an ass out of u and me! So thought I would seek knowledge from those much wiser.

..and yes I know the devices are legacy legacy - but they work for me at the mo

You can just plug the fan connector into the motherboard, no need for any changes to the pins. The fan connector is keyed, so it should only fit on the correct way.

The 4th pin is for the PWM function, which you won't get (but can't get anyway with only 3 pins on the motherboard).

OK, seeking to answer my own question:

There are two system fan headers on My ReadyNas Ultra 6 at the top edge to the side of the large case fan.

I've checked the pins with a meter and from right to left they appear to be:

1. Earth,

2. perm 12v,

3. less than 12v ~ 11 at time of measuring

Using Google I find that 4 wire 12v Noctua fans aligning the connector as per the pic above gives

1: Earth

2: 12v

3: RPM Speed

4: PWM Signal +5V

So that looks to me like it should just work with pin 4 the pulse width modulation pin not connected.

I presume I will get an expected RPM reported back at the web interface based on what the NAS expects it to be from the voltage applied down pin 3

Am I close?
