Morning all - and thanks to all that have jumped in. I thought I'd give a quick update.
The system has been working fine in it's current configuration of RAID1 (two disks only) for just under a week now. (The third factory reset was last weekend). I have plans to re-introduce a third drive this evening and, as you all know, this will change the configuration from RAID1 to RAID5. It is the RAID5 configuration where I have my concern.
It will take the better part of the weekend to resyc, and I'll update the status as appropriate. If it continues to work after the resync completes, I'll add the fourth drive back in next weekend.

Mornings all,
So, I inserted the third drive Friday evening. From Friday night @ 20h40 => Sunday night at 20h38, (pretty much exactly 2 days) when the sync completed (successfully) everything went fine. No restarts. Volume expanded. System uptime at that point was ~8.5 days.
This morning when I got up and checked the logs, I was greeted with the following:
2021 Mar 15 04:46:01 System: ReadyNASOS background service started. 2021 Mar 15 04:45:58 System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. 2021 Mar 15 04:40:19 System: ReadyNASOS background service started. 2021 Mar 15 04:40:16 System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. 2021 Mar 15 03:14:44 System: ReadyNASOS background service started. 2021 Mar 15 03:14:41 System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. 2021 Mar 15 02:18:28 System: ReadyNASOS background service started. 2021 Mar 15 02:18:25 System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. 2021 Mar 15 01:21:13 System: ReadyNASOS background service started. 2021 Mar 15 01:21:10 System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. 2021 Mar 14 23:07:11 System: ReadyNASOS background service started. 2021 Mar 14 23:07:08 System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. 2021 Mar 14 20:38:01 Volume: Volume data is resynced
... {Insert bad word here}
Raid 1 works fine, Raid 5 doesn't. Perhaps some system file isn't getting updated properly? I was thinking that it might have been a problem with the expand process, but then remembered I did a factory reset with all four drive installed and enabled. That run also completed the sync successfully, but then OS restarts began a couple of hours later.
Next up on my list of things to try is a OS reinstall. Which I"ll try later today.
Once again, I'm completely open to suggestions if anybody has ideas for things to try or check.
Thanks.
Doug

This could be disk related, or perhaps power-related.
I'd replace disk 3 with disk 4, and see what happens after resync.

HI Stephen. Your response was almost exactly the same response my brother game me. :) I'll give you the same response that I gave him...

Disk 3 ran solid for 2 days, no issues, while the resync completed. It would have had a steady read/writes to it during the recsyncing. It also successfully completed the Long Generic Seagate test run (which, isn't a guarantee, but ...) At this point, I"m suspect to think that it is a drive hardware failure. I'm leary to to complete any steps right now that cause the volume to require re-building (add a fourth, swapping 3 for 4) as the OS restarts are NOT causing a resync to be retriggered. (and I thought I might try some suggestions that take half an hour instead of two days!)
The power related suggestion is a good one, but the NAS is behind a UPS and there is nothing in the logs to indicate any type of power issue. If there was a power issue, I would have expected to see something during the 8 days that the NAS was running prior to sync finishing. The OS restarting, from my observations so far, has only been happening when the NAS is in a raid 5 config... I've (almost) convinced myself that it is something to do with that.
Thanks for your suggestions. I do appreciate them.

Mornings all - it's been a few days so I thought I'd drop an update note as as lot as happened since my last entry.
None of the below worked:
- Swapped #3 & #4 drives - let it sync
- put behind different ups
- OS reset
- factory reset (4th time) with all four drives (worked fine until ~5 hours after the sync completed)
- destroyed volume and recreated with different name (not /data)
- disabled X-RAID
- tried different network adapter
In desperation, I created a support case on the NetGear site. The unit is four years old, so I did't have email/voice support, but I did have another half year on hardware warranty. I downloaded the logs attached them to the case, and after a brief ten minute phone call, I was given a RMA with a new (well probably refurbished) unit scheduled to arrive on Monday. I'm not sure, but it might have had something to do with the service notice mentioned earlier. Either way, I'll take it.
So, hopefully, this should be the end of the epic. (Although the geek in me really would like to have a concrete answer).
Thanks again to all the sent out suggestions.
