It is their supported tool for changing the head parking threshold. wdidle is quite old.

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

Does this only change the parking threshold? I thought WDIDLE3 disables it to begin with... It also mentions that you should do a backup, and it seems it's not a DOS program?

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

WDIDLE3 is an old program, and WDC says it isn't compatible with all their drives. The new program is what they want you to use, and they've gone to the trouble to provide windows, mac, and linux versions.

I don't know why you'd want a DOS program, but feel free to use whatever. HDPARM also apparently can be used.

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

Good news everyone!!!

I just bought 2 WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 and after reading the reported problem because of LLC 8 seconds, i decided to check the default disk values.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL!
WD changed the value from 8 to 300 seconds because of YOUR CLAIMS, giving you reason!
(just to mention that the disk date is january 2014)

Entering in ssh ReadyNAS102 i run ....
root@HOME_NAS:/# hdparm -J /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
wdidle3 = 300 secs (or 13.8 secs for older drives)

et voilá

if someone want's more info's about my disks, fill free to ask! it's possible that other value have been changed...
Meanwhile here is the result of running smartctl -a /dev/sda
root@HOME_NAS:/# smartctl -a /dev/sda

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

I just purchased the WD red 4TB drives, and then found this thread. I was terrified I had bought the wrong drives, and that these WD red's would not last very long. I had two Seagate Barracuda 3TB drives fail on me at 9, and 10 months respectively.
I looked at all the fixes presented so far, but wanted to give the drives a chance with no modifications. My drive has been in my Netgear NAS ultra 2 for 24 hours now with an LCC count of 0. I am getting this information from the smart button on the drive

Model: WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0
Serial: WD-WCC4E1126755
Firmware: 80.00A80

SMART Attribute

Raw Read Error Rate 0
Spin Up Time 0
Start Stop Count 2
Reallocated Sector Count 0
Seek Error Rate 0
Power On Hours 27
Spin Retry Count 0
Calibration Retry Count 0
Power Cycle Count 2
Power-Off Retract Count 1
Load Cycle Count 0
Temperature Celsius 42
Reallocated Event Count 0
Current Pending Sector 0
Offline Uncorrectable 0
UDMA CRC Error Count 0
Multi Zone Error Rate 0

ATA Error Count 0

I believe this means that my LCC is not being affected as in previous drives, Can someone let me know. Is there a more in depth test I should run to verify these results?

I've just purchased a readynas 312 and 2 x 3TB WD red drives. Would you like me to test idle times (load cycles)? Would have to figure out how to do this though.

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

All you need to do is look at the SMART stats. Download the logs, and then download them again a day later, and compare the load cycle counts in disk_info.log

But letsgowithbob should be fine - he'd have seen much higher counts if he had installed drives which had the too-short threshold.

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

Hi there,

running idle3ctl on my NAS gives the following result for both my REDs

Idle3 timer set to 138 (0x8a)

I'm just curious, since my load count is 7 after 29 hours, but what does 138 means?

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

I believe it means the head parking timer is set to 300 seconds on those drives. That is based on the info here: http://idle3-tools.sourceforge.net/

129 -> 30 seconds
130 -> 60 seconds
...
138 -> 300 seconds

Reading this articel, is it save to buy the 4 TB version WD for the ultra 2 or is it better to buy another disk ?

It's not on the HCL, so netgear will likely deny support.

However, it will work. You should check the load-cycle counts after installation, and if they climb you can reset them with the WDC software tool. That is easiest if you temporarily connect the drive to a windows PC.

Re: WD Red drives park their heads like WD Green drives?

I know it may be just a nonsense to justify why they're denying support, but I am told by support that 4TB RED are seen causing trouble on some units. I am also told they are being tested on OS6 machines now, and that for the time being there are no plans to test them on OS4 in the future.

I have those drives, and experienced ONE kernel crash on my unit. It may be relevant, it may be not, I just thought I should add it to the conversation.

The numbers look normal to me. It looks like you have disk spindown enabled. If so, what threshold are you using?

Is there something in particular you are concerned about?

I just have a basic concerned based on some of the comments in this thread and on the internet in general about the Red drives. Seems like a number of people have had premature failures of the drives.

That explains the high start/stop count. I don't see any problem leaving the threshold there. Personally I use longer thresholds (~60 minutes).

jerryk wrote:

For a brief period a WDC firmware change reset the head parking threshold too low for the ReadyNAS - which resulted in rapidly rising load cycle counts. They have since fixed that (and provided a tool to allow people to adjust those thresholds themselves if needed).

If you had that issue, your load cycle counts would have been much higher.

I don't know about the "internet in general". I am running 8 of these drives in various NAS (a 2 TB model in a duo v1, 5 3 TB in a pro-6, and two 3 TB models in an RN102). The oldest has been running more than 15000 hours, several others are over 10000. The newest has about 2700. I've had no problems with any of them.

As far as I can tell from the posts here, NAS users are finding them to be quite reliable. Note that all drives have some failures, and people who have problems are more likely to post their experience than people who aren't having any.
