WD30EFRX - ReadyNas Duo RND2000 does not support 3TB disk
[edit: This post is specific to ReadyNas Duo v1, ex. my RND2000 v2,
I'm updating the subject based on Ixas feedback to avoid confusing other people]
Dear all,
I just bought a 3To WD Red (WD30EFRX) and I'm having troubles replacing my disk #2 with this new drive.
Are other experiencing the same trouble?
I would like to know if this comes from the NAS or from the Disk.
I initially set-up my NAs with 2x Samsung HD103SI 1TB (they were marked as compatible by the community, in French:
http://www.netgear-forum.com/forum/index.php?s=3a789b594be7518d3565fc1cbeace846&showtopic=64150).
I'm using XRAID. After 5 years of loyal service, one of them started failing SMART tests.
I shutdown the NAS and replaced one of the existing drives with the WD (I got lot of difficulties to open the caddy!).
After starting, it was not recognized and its status was 'Dead'.
I restarted, the disk is now recognized and its status is still 'Dead', but visible as:
WDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 931 GB
(931 GB is the space of my first disk)
System logs indicate:
*Disk add event occurred on SATA channel 2.
* The disk attached to channel 2 could not be used. The most common reasons are RAID resync in progress, faulty drives, and disks that are too small to be added to the array.
Both resync (there is a single drive which is up) and disk to small (it is 3 times more than the initial one) seems relevant in my case.
Is the conclusion that the drive is faulty or that it is not supported by ReadyNas Duo v2 (even if marked as officially supported in http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641)?
Thanks for anyone feedback.
Regards,
Gilles

Re: WD30EFRX ReadyNas Duo v2 - problem replacing legacy disk
As per the firmware you have indicated which is RAIDiator v4.1.14, the NAS that you have is a ReadyNAS Duo v1. Kindly read this link: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/
ReadyNAS Duo v1 does NOT support 3TB drives. It only supports up to 2TB disks. Please refer to this link: http://www.readynas.com/app/hcl_disk

Re: WD30EFRX - ReadyNas RND2000 v2 does not support 3TB disk
Thanks Ixa,
It makes sense. I have been confused by the ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 v2 sticker on the box.
Your links were great.
I appreciate both how fast your answered and how precise it was.
Regards,
Gilles
