nv+ v1 or v2 or 104?
I'd appreciate anyone who can answer any of these questions. Please reply even if you know the answer to only one of the questions.
I'm contemplating exchanging by new nv+ v2 (got it for $250) for either nv+ (v1, $400) or the newer 104 model ($340) but I'm having difficulties finding some answers.
For instance:
1) What is the max. storage volume I can create with the nv+? I have three 3TB WD Red drives (12TB total) (models WD30-EFRX) which are on the HCL for all 3 ReadyNAS models. Can I go 16TB max. with the nv+ (using other 4TB drives), or at least 12 TB (with the 3TB red drives) if I put on the latest firmware? The 104 supports 16TB for sure but apparently isn't much faster than the nv+ v2 as it's still ARM based.

...says max. is 2TB drives which would suggest 8TB total storage in the 4-bay model but the 3TB WD Red drives I have are on the HCL which suggests either 8TB total or 12TB. I say 8TB because although it supports the 3TB drives, maybe it will only see them as 2TB drives? I got 5.4TB total from the three 3TB WD drives on the nv+ v2 using X-RAID2 (and supports 12TB with 4x3TB drives) so I'd like to still have that same total size on the nv+ v1.
2) I currently have an X-RAID2 volume in my nv+ v2. Can I move the 3 red drives I mentioned from the nv+ v2 to the nv+ v1 without losing data?
3) The nv+ v2 has support for Active Directory users & groups. Does the nv+ v1 have it too? I have a domain and I'd like to restrict folder/file access to AD users/groups.
The reason I'm considering switching to the nv+ v1 is because the v2 has no addons other than ReadyNAS Photos II and SSH Root and the v1 has the Atom processor with 1GB ram and more addons so it should be much faster copying files from my pc to the nas and vice-versa. With the v2 I only get 20-25 MB/s on my gigabit lan which is slow. And the 3.0 USB ports on it act like 1.1 because I connected my USB 3.0 Pivos (XIOS) media player and I only get about 8-13 MB/s copying files using Windows Explorer or the Backup tab in Frontview. Using latest NAS firmware too (Raidiator 5.3.

Totally incorrect. The NV+ v1 uses a sparc processor and has 256 MB of ram. It has much lower performance than the arm or x86 models.yorkman wrote: ...The reason I'm considering switching to the nv+ v1 ...because the v1 has the Atom processor with 1GB ram and more addons ...
I think you might be confusing the NV+ v1 with the ultra or pro lines. - yorkmanAspirantI thought the ultra is also known as the nv+ v1. My mistake.
But it's the Netgear RNDU4000, ReadyNAS Ultra 4 I'm referring to whether it'd be worth spending the extra $150 after returning the nv+ v2? Can you answer some of the questions I asked? I'd really appreciate it as help is so hard to come by for these products it seems. I also bought a 4th Red 3TB drive to add to the X-RAID2 I've created on the v2 but I don't want to open it yet if I'm going to try the RNDU4000 Ultra 4. I'm not sure how much performance increase (if any) I can expect by jumping from the v2 to the Ultra 4 when it comes to copying files to/from the nas to my pc over gigabit (currently only about 20 MB/s) and whether backing up from the nas to a usb3.0 (which I know the Ultra doesn't have so it'd be usb2.0 only) will get me better than usb1.1 speeds which I'm currently getting with the usb3.0 pivos xios media player I'm trying to copy from/to.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTo answer your original questions [changing them as needed to the ultra or pro]
There is one 4 TB drive on the HCL, and there are others that work [though you risk losing support if you use them]. So you can get 4x4TB. Your 3TB RED drives will certainly work.yorkman wrote: 1) What is the max. storage volume I can create with the ultra...
That review was published before 3TB internal drives were available for sale, so it was true at the time. However, the ultra firmware was upgraded to support the larger drives.yorkman wrote: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/31272-netgear-readynas-ultra-4-reviewed ...says max. is 2TB drives...
No. You can't migrate them to any other NAS platform w/o losing data.yorkman wrote: 2) I currently have an X-RAID2 volume in my nv+ v2. Can I move the 3 red drives I mentioned from the nv+ v2 to the ultra without losing data?
No. Look for a pro-4 if you need that. Also, the pro-4 has a 5 year hardware warranty and is faster than the ultra.yorkman wrote: 3) The nv+ v2 has support for Active Directory users & groups. Does the ultra have it too?...
Basically, with ReadyNAS you can get an RN1xx/3xx/5xx which are the going-forward lines, or you can get the older Ultra or Pro (while they are still in inventory). The Ultra/Pro would have all the features you reference, but has a dated user interface, and is mature [that is, don't expect it to ever do any more]. The OS6 on the other hand is brand-new, and the firmware still needs some work.
Be more careful on the model names though, otherwise you might not get what you expect. - yorkmanAspirantYes but at a MUCH higher cost. No thanks.
