Recover HDD data from broken ReadyNAS

Hi, I'm considering to buy a ReadyNAS 102 and I am just an end user with little knowledge around NAS...

I plan to use my RN102 for my office activity... My concern is that my ReadyNAS hardware might be broken

In the case that happened, can I recover my HDD data by removing it from ReadyNAS and using SATA to USB cable to connect it directly to my computer with Linux distro which support Btrfs? and does it need some config first?

Thanks

  • You would need a Linux machine which supports BTRFS and the ability to enter a small number of commands.

We are using free Linux tools such as mdadm, so recovery using an ordinary x86 Linux machine should work fine. You should make sure the Linux machine is running as up to date as possible kernel and btrfs-progs.

There is even some paid software now for Windows now that could be used, I think, but I haven't tried it.

This is assuming that the problem is just with the chassis and the disks and what is on them is fine. If there is a problem with/on the disks then it becomes more complicated.

The 102 does have a 3 year limited hardware warranty.

Also if the chassis did fail after the warranty expired you could ask for advice here on purchasing a new model and what steps would be involved for that to be used to recover your data. It may be that simply moving the disks across would be all that would be required or it could be more involved.

Note that there are things that can go wrong other than the chassis failing. If your data is important to you don't store it on just the one device, whatever that device is. Backup your data. Note that if the primary copy of your data is on your PC then the copy on the NAS is a backup.
