Netgear Genie App and BT home hub 5

Hi all, I have a BT home hub 5 and a netgear ex7300 extender.

Should I be able to use the netgear genie app on my iPhone/iPad. I am unable to connect it to my router for some reason.

Netgear's genies won't see "third party" modem/routers. I've tried.

Not now, I've just bought & setup a D7800  🙂

Uh oh. Does that support the flavour if IPv6 that BT uses? A lot of Netgear modems do not.

That may not matter at the moment, but one day it could be important.

Never heard of it until now. I'm just someone that wanted better performance. If netgear don't they'll have a lot of angry customers, or BT will have a lot of people switching ISP's. or is the only way to be sure to never buy a netgear router? Who knows, we'll have to wait & see.

The most likely outcome if Netgear refuses to support the standards used by the UK's biggest ISP.

Remember, many other ISPs run on the back of BT's Openreach network, so you don't have to be a  BT customer to feel the effects of this one.

Re: Netgear Genie App and BT home hub 5

I've just spoken to Netgear support. They will email me confirmation.

This modem router, the D7800 also known as The Nighthawk X4s AC2600 Wifi VDSL/ADSL does support Ipv6, so hopefully I won't have a problem.

That's not the point. Are the D7800's flavours of IPv6 the same as BT's?

But as I said earlier this may not matter for some time. There are just too many devices out there that don't support IPv6. My point is that I would not buy anything that does not support this feature. It probably doesn't matter to most people.

What do you mean by "flavours"? They said it supports ipv6.

I bought a new router because the stability and performance of my home hub 5 was very frustrating. The new one has made a tremendous difference. On 5ghx I now get a download speed of about 43mbs & ping of 10/11 on the extender, at the farthest part of my house. Previously I could rarely use the 5ghx, & if even if I could, it would start to fail a few days later. That was my motive & concern but as a lay person I don't understand what problems you're suggesting I might have in the future.

There is no single, one size fits all, implementation of IPv6. All that was explained in the various messages that I linked to.

Go to page 80 in the manual for your device. Follow the instructions and go to the pages where you set up IPv6. Can you see somewhere to set it up for IPv6-PD?

I have no idea how it offers from other variants of IPv6. I do know that my modem also supports IPv6 but it does not to IPv6-PD. The Homehub does.

And an offocial response in those earlier links suggested that Netgear has no plans to enable this in the D7800.

I'll go back & ask them that as well.

so what are the consequences of that, will the router cease to work?

Re: Netgear Genie App and BT home hub 5

It is highly unlikely that the router will stop working. It is an internet addressing thing. My guess is that for some time the only likely effect is in how efficiently networks operate.

OK, well thanks for making me aware of the potential problem.
