XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

This is really painful, I think is since I upgraded firmware recently from Netgear. At random times, but most noticiable when I try to play a game like Overwatch. I lose connection to server and I am kicked out of the game and even penalized. It happened also with voice applications like Skype, Discord etc, not just games.

Checking the logs in DumaOS I can clearly see my Lan IP is lost and renew constantly, with the pattern below. This happens often and several times in a row. Even writing this post It was challenging at times for this reason.

I have tried a bunch of firmwares from here, the beta, etc. Even one of the latest on DumaOS saying Fixed DHCP leases :(. I think my only option  at this point I guess is going back to a old firmware?

Now this router is pretty much useless and I can't understand how a bunch of firmwares trying to fix the issue, got nothing here. I am really disapointed.

Tried also factory reset, which is really annoying, giving static ip addres but still I get a renew lease on a reserved one, yay!

I have seen similar posts here but no real solutions, so please let me know what I can do other than buy another router.

Thanks.

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

Sorry to hear this! Did you factory reset after installing the beta firmwares? This is often required after installing a new firmware as it clears out any low-level code left over from the previous firmware. Of course, if the latest beta firmware doesn't resolve the issue for you, you can certainly revert back to and older firmware that was working for you. Netgear are actively working on the DHCP issue so you will only need to use the older stable firmware until we are able to release an update that is verified as the fix for the DHCP issue.

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

Yes, I did factory reset, every time I tested the firmwares. Which is really painful as I have to readd all the devices back to the router.

I will try with an older firmware and see what happens but this problem seems to have been around for a while and not going anywhere.

Thanks

Do other devices experience disconnects or is it just this one device? If you disable the Geo-Filter does it happen less?

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

There are other devices doing the same pattern ranging from computers to android tv, Alexa, etc. But not all the devices do this behavior only a few connected on different things, Wireless, and cable. Geofilter is not added for any device so it should be off.

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

In LAN Settings change the DHCP pool to start at 192.168.1.50 instead, then set reserved IPs for your affected devices between .2 & .49 and then reboot the router and see if it still occurs.

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

This is really frustrating as I said. I went I set the dhcp pool to start at 30, then I assigned Ip's like 10 to the affected devices and I still get intermitent DHCP lease events, how is this even possible :(. I tried similar solutions to this before but I always got the same results.

Look at this big spam of lease

changes for a reserved address 😞

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

Did they disconnect as well or did you just get log entries? Seems to be specific to just one device there

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

As I said it loses connection whenever you get those logs, I am sending specifically the ones I am interested as it is the machine I use for gaming, but there are similar logs on the other devices. Difference is those devices are alexa or android tablet, and losing connection like that is not a big deal. It is though on network games in which I get kicked out the game and also penalized for leaving games :(.

Most interesting question is why router leases DHCP on a computer that is not on the pool and has a reserved address, just asking. Also as I can see I am not the only one affected by this so I don't think it just my computer which is weird.

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

It shouldn't be doing that, may be part of the issue NG are investigating. I'd suggest reinstalling the latest beta version, .120 using TFTP and then factory resetting after for the freshest installation. TFTP installs bypassing the boot process and any issues that could be present there. https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

I am already at that version 2.32.120 😞 which I took with great hopes when I saw this.

Highlights of this update:

Big improvements to IPv6 compatibility
Improvements to general stability
System-wide GUI improvements
Updates to game and device detection
***** Fixed DHCP renewal causing internet to drop ****

I did factory reset and everything. Also installed some other previous to that, the only one, but I think I should try one of the oldest 😞

At this point is hard to know if it happens because it is time, or only when I actively play a game like Ovewatch, but it seems to happen 100% if I play these games and less if I am using explorer on internet, just in case that can help.

Re: XR500 Connection drops constantly due DHCP renewal

Please do try the TFTP method as if it an issue in boot we won't be able to resolve it easily, the best way is via TFTP. Are there any days where you're not gaming to see if you disconnect or not?

Ac4000 same problems. 3 lan connections, each dropping intermittently. Affecting my business, about to toss it and buy something else

@TallyHo I'd recommend posting here for more accurate advice on your model https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/bd-p/home-wifi-routers-nighthawk
