Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

My router is a Nighthawk R7000 with 1.0.7.2_1.1.93 firmware.

I am attempting to replace a DSL gateway with a Zoom 5370 cable modem [just plain vanilla: no router included]. When the 5370 is directly connected to my Windows 7 desktop computer, I can use a browser to access Zoom's "Configuration Manager" administration area by going to IP 192.168.100.1. But when the cable modem is connected to the R7000 router's "Internet Port" [in place of the DSL gateway], I cannot browse to 192.168.100.1: the page times out / never comes up. (Tried in both Firefox and Opera browsers.)

I looked carefully through the router's settings and found nothing that might conflict with the cable modem's IP address.

I don't know how to begin to troubleshoot this (and am profoundly anxious to get off of DSL).

UPDATE

Apparently another user had the same issue some time back:
https://community.netgear.com/t5/R6000-Series-AC-WiFi-Routers/Accessing-cable-modem-config-page-from...

Is there still no possibility of resolving this problem?

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

I've got a Motorola SB6141 and 192.168.100.1 accesses it fine on my R7000.

The modem goes into the Yellow Internet port which it appears you've done.

DHCP could be the culprit here? Are you using your ISP's or another one? ISP's would know about the modem pages, another one might not?

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Thanks for the report. That gives me some hope.

I’m using the R7000 itself as the DHCP server (as configured under Advanced > Setup > LAN Setup). If I didn’t do that, I expect I’d have to manually assign IP addresses (“address reservation”) for each device’s MAC address.

The address range is 192.168.1.4 thru 192.168.1.254, so there isn’t any apparent DHCP conflict with the cable modem’s IP.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Opps, I meant DNS, not DHCP, sorry.

Under BASIC => INTERNET SETUP:

Domain Name Server (DNS) Address
Get Automatically from ISP

Is this selected?

Can you PING it? This is what I get:

C:\>ping 192.168.100.1

    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Cable modem is on a different sub-net, you'll never get a conflict. 192,168,1,xxx vs. 192,168.100.xxx.

Yes, I get my DNS server assigned by the ISP, but I can’t imagine how using my own choice would have an impact on this problem.

Thanks for your interest.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Are you, by any chance, using PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP on the R7000 to log into your Internet service?

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

I use PPPoE on the R7000, but that's with my DSL connection.

My R7000 has it's "Connection Mode" set to "Manually Connect".  My attempts to ping and to log into the cable modem's Configuration Manger are being done while not connected to the ISP.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Just to be clear, when the R7000 is connected to the cable modem, are you setting Does your Internet connection require a login? to No?  Most cable ISPs do not use PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP, so you should disable this.  PPPoE is probably preventing you from pinging your cable modem.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

I have not had a chance to try turning “Does your Internet connection require a login?” off; it isn’t obvious to me why that would have an impact when I’m not connected to the ISP in the first place.  But I will check it out.

Last night I attached my Zoom 5370 cable modem to a Western Digital WDBKSP0010BCHHESN 'My Net N900 Central' router and connected that to my desktop computer.  I am able to ping 192.168.100.1 and open the cable modem’s Configuration Manager in a browser at that address through the router.

Since this works and since others are able to access a device at 192.168.100.1 when connected to an R7000, it seems reasonable to say that my inability to do likewise is a problem I shouldn’t be having.

Using the Western Digital N900 is not an option; it is a POS and the reason I purchased Netgear's R7000 in the first place.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Was that the configuration you had before putting the R7000 into service?

Possible you TCP/IP stack is messed up or the network connection?

Can you PING GOOGLE.COM?

Was the MODEM ever turned OFF? If not that could be the problem, only the OLD router is 'known' to it.

When changing routers the best thing to do is turn off the MODEM, ROUTER, and ALL PC's... then individually bring them up in order waiting to the prior power-up to complete, MODEM, then ROUTER, and finally all PC's. That allows each to recognize the upstream device.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

I am communicating through the R7000 right now.  I have been using it happily since December 2014.  This is the first issue I have ever had with it.

As originally posted, when the 5370 cable modem is directly connected to my Windows 7 desktop computer, I can use a browser to access Zoom's "Configuration Manager" administration area by going to IP 192.168.100.1.  But when the cable modem is connected to the R7000 router's "Internet Port" so I can connect my LAN devices, I cannot browse to 192.168.100.1: the page times out / never comes up.  [I do not have this problem with my previous router, a WD N900.]

I am not having any web communication problems with the R7000.

I am NOT changing routers: I am changing GATEWAYS.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Do a TRACERT to 192.168.100.1 and I suspect it will stop at 192.168.1.1 if your router can't communicate with the modem.

Not sure why though? My results:

C:\>tracert 192.168.100.1

Tracing route to 192.168.100.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  READYSHARE [192.168.1.1]
  2     4 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.100.1

Trace complete.

There could be a setting blocking. I guess you could try saving your settings and doing the full reset (depress hidden button on the back and wait until the power light flashes) and then try it. If it works it is one of your settings... once done you can restore the saved settings. Only test I can think of that might shed some light on this.

I think he meant remove it for a period of time and put it back in. Then try.

Is the modem a combo, modem and router? If so, is it in Bridged mode?

When you connect the 2, are you putting the output of the modem into the YELLOW connector?

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Well, I did briefly remove and replace the coax cable before running the tracert. So that’s done. [Seems to me I should be able to ping the cable modem even with no coax connected at all.]

As I said in Post #1 above, the Zoom 5370 cable modem is “[just plain vanilla: no router included]”.

When I connect the devices, I am replacing the DSL gateway with the cable modem using the WAN / Internet port. If I weren’t doing that, I wouldn’t be chatting with you now.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

I looked at the modem's documentation (http://www.zoomtel.com/documentation/cable/5370-QuickStart-Eng.pdf) and it had 2 interesting comments:

==============

If that does not solve the problem, you may need to contact your cable service provider and give them the MAC address of the router’s WAN port.

==============

That was in the 'working' section on page 5. If the ISP needs to know your Router MAC address that to me means it is burried somewhere in the modem? Might be the answer as to why the old setup works... Cloning the MAC address might work, but that is really a band aid, not the fix.

===============

US: (617) 753-0963

===============

Phone number for help.

Also on page 6 where it describes the rear panel:

============

RESET
Press this button for 5 seconds in the unlikely event that you need to restore factory default settings.
============

IF there is a MAC Address imbedded in the modem, the RESET should erase it and start you on setting up the modem again, it might fix it. Me, I'd call the number above first (assuming it is a new unit and registered) and see what they recommend.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

Searay – I am ashamed to admit that I am a networking noob and the only devices I know how to spoof are the two ethernet ports on my motherboard. Beyond that, my mind is a blank. I can not even envision which device I would want to spoof and which I would want to fool, and to what end.

Also, I would be worried that Comcast might track the MAC addresses of the gateway, the router and the LAN port of the base computer, all for the purpose of filtering who is allowed to connect. If so, gaming the MAC addresses might get me disconnected.

But if you'd care to expand on what you have in mind, I will eagerly listen.

BTW, when I bought the Zoom 5370 cable modem I had no idea Netgear made cable modems <insert crying emoji here>. Silly me. Zoom technical support has been … well, underwhelming. After prodding and pleading, this was the only response I was able to pry out of them:

Sometimes there is something on the routers end that blocks the connection to the modem. The work around for it is to go into your computers network settings and set up a static ip address that matches the modems ip address. so a 192.168.100.15 would work.”

AFAIK, assigning a static IP to “the computer” amounts to assigning a static IP to the LAN port connected to the router. But when manually assigning a static IP one MUST also specify the default gateway … and that has to be the R7000 router’s IP address, does it not (192.168.1.1)? But the latter is on a different subnet and such an arrangement most definitely will not work.

Have any idea what Zoom technical support might mean by what they have said?

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

IrvSp – Thank you for your concern. Much appreciated.

The MAC address of the cable modem is permanent; resetting won’t erase it.

In any case, everything works swimmingly with my Western Digital router, while the R7000 works not. Since I seem to have a router problem, I can’t see how fiddling with the cable modem should be necessary or should help.

Unfortunately, the number (617) 753-0963 is not for general help, but for people who have been told that their modem is not approved by the ISP.

Well it could be the MODEM will only talk to the WD Router via 192.168.100.1, not to the R7000. It is possible that the WD MAC address IS stored in the MODEM.

Setting the R7000's MAC ADDRESS to the WD Router might work too, and possibly resetting the MODEM to its shipped state would force it to recognize the R7000.

However, this might not be the cause as I would expect that if the above were true you couldn't get to the Internet, but who knows, it might be worth a try.

All we know is that your PC probably isn't the problem. Still could be a 'trusted network' under your A/V, but again, if that were the case it would fail all the time.

I for one am not sure where the problem lies, but it had to be the modem/router combo more than likely than the PC/Router/Modem.

Re: Cannot access cable modem’s Configuration Manager via R7000

What @Retired_Member meant was to change the MAC Address of the R7000 to be the SAME as the WD. That is the MAC Address IT (the R7000) would present to the MODEM.

Easy to do. Go to the router via a browser. Then ADVANCED-->SETUP-->INTERNET SETUP, and at the bottom is the Router MAC Address. Probably set as the DEFAULT. Select Use This MAC Address and enter the WD's MAC ADDRESS and do an APPLY.

That makes the R7000 present to the MODEM the same MAC ADDRESS as the WD does and might fool the MODEM into working for you.

TheEtherYou are a genius. After disabling PPPoE, the Zoom cable modem Configuration Manager popped right up. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Still cannot fathom how that setting should make any difference when I don't even have a connection established, but I’ll gladly take it anyway.

That’s the first thing that has gone right here in about 4 days, so I am ever so grateful.
