Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

Does someone have also discovered Problems copying large files over a wlan-bridge connection between a R7800 and an EX7300?

Setup: The R7800 is serving as a router for several mobile devices over 2.4G and is connected via 5G to an EX7300 with two pcs.

(The EX7300 is working as a wlan-bridge.)

Problem: If I copy large files (ISO-Files > 300MB) over this  connection (R7800 <> EX7300) then I get repeatable crc errors during the copy-process. The file-size is the same, but if you compare by content, bit for bit, than you see differences. Copy-tools showed the same errors and informed me about the crc problems. The problem persists if I change to the 2.4G wlan between the R7800 and the EX7300.

Replacing the R7800 with another bridgehead the problems are gone.

Support don't want to help, since the device is older than 90 days.

Anyone with solutions or do i have to send the device back?

Addition: If I copy a large amount of small files, for example photos (3 to 8 MB), every 40th to 50th photo-file is showing the same crc errors.

> [...] R7800 [...] EX7300 [...]

   EX7300 or EX7300v2?  Firmware versions?

I know little about these devices, but even less about what you're
doing.

> [...] copying large files over a wlan-bridge connection [...]

I don't know what that means.  I see "wlan-bridge" nowhere in the
EX7300 User Manual.  What would Netgear call your configuration?

"copying" how, exactly?  From what to what?

> [...] several mobile devices [...]

Not a very detailed description of anything.

> [...] two pcs.

So, some version(s) or other of Windows?

> Replacing the R7800 with another bridgehead the problems are gone.

Does "bridgehead" mean "router"? Inventing your own technical terms
is not conducive to effective communication.  And that's with the
EX7300[vX] still involved?  Is the problem with the router, or the
extender, or the combination, or what?

If you copy files from one Windows system to another (through the same
network devices, using, say, File Explorer) do you have the same
problem?

You seem to have a relatively complex network configuration, with
poorly described computers/devices, using unknown software in mysterious
ways.  I'd start by simplifying things to try to determine the actual
cause, rather than trying to guess which part of the mess is
responsible.

And if you want anyone else (who might have similar junk) to
investigate the problem, then you might need to provide a better
description of what you're actually doing.

Thanks for your reply.

(Please have in mind that i am not an english native speaking person.)

First I will try to simplify, then i will give more information about the configuration and i will include a network topology.

1. The (simplified) network topology

A PC ist connected via lan cable to an EX7300.

The EX7300 is wirelessly connected to a R7800.

A nas (network attached storage) is connected via lan cable to the R7800.

2. The problem occurs when I copy a large amout of data to the nas over this topology.

When the data is copied and I check the content binary-like I see differences.

3. If I replace only the R7800 in this chain using other hardware the errors are gone.

So the same network topology produces problems when there is a R7800 in use and is not producing any errors when the R7800 is replaced by another accesspoint.

4. The PCs run Win7 Prof. 64bit.

The nas is a synology 1618+.

The network topology ("chain") includes a hp procurve 2910al switch.

For the rest of the setup see the attached file.

5. I did several tests with different switches, cables and so on and the R7800 remains problematic.

Update: In the meantime I received a second R7800 (within the warranty) but it shows the same problems. Fortunately the technical support is still investigating and committed in solving the problem. Hopefully they find the bug.

Quick answer, yes it's a known issue in Accesspoint mode. Always worked fine for me in router mode, but AP mode is completely broken.

Reported it to them around half a year back, so far nothing is fixed.

Only solution for me was to change the vendor... The R7800 is now laying around, in hopes for an update that probably will never come.

Here my old thread. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/R7800-data-corruption-in-Accesspoint-mode/m-...

Btw. Voxels firmware is also affected by this and he has the same issue.

That sadly did not work for me. Not in the original unit, nor in the RMA one. But yours might, it's sure worth a try.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

Update: The problem occurs as well, when there are WLAN-Devices (like a notebook) connecting with (via) the R7800 to storage.

I tested with an ubuntu samba-share connected to the R7800 and get the same crc errors i got with my synology nas.

The service has asked for a remote-session, which hopefully helps to show the problem, so that the development department can start solving the issue.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

One more time folks. Get a separate NAS and you will not have these issues. Routers were never really meant to be a NAS, something thought up and cobbled  together by manufacturers. Gave some more eye candy to the box.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

I don't know if you read the thread, but we have "separate nas" in use.

The issues were discovered using the router and having a nas (synology 1618+) connected.

The tests and checks later done included a samba share which were suggested by the netgear support team.

When you have only one answer, there's no need to read the question.

To be fair, he actually has two answers: 1) Don't buy/use any Netgear
products, and 2) Buy/use a purpose-built (expensive) NAS device instead
of using a router as a file server.

Given recent (and not-so-recent) problems with Netgear router
firmware, such advice may have some value, but after enough (mindless?)
repetition, it certainly does get tiring.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

Update: The development team in taiwan gives 100% and have seen the error in reality via remote-session.

They will try to reproduce the errors in their environment.

For the moment it's not clear with which modul it's happening or if it's a matter of an amount of data or a question of time.

So it will be a bit tricky to detect.

But i trust the guys doing a good job to find a solution for this problem.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

Update: If the R7800 runs in Router-Mode (not AP-Mode) i could not discover any problems until now - only the AP-Mode is problematic.

Maybe a solution for some ppl to switch to AP-Mode. Since i have a bit more complex structure i would like to use the AP-Mode and for that i need a bugfixed firmware.

I did tests with the last four fw-versions, but all have this issue.

You are right.

I switched to router-mode although i only need it as an AP.

Anyway it's working fine in the router mode and only the hassle with forwarding rules and a second ip-range is a bit painful.

Guys...

Just attach incoming Ethernet cable into your R7800' LAN port instead of WAN port. I beat you will forget your CRC broken files in AP mode... Does not matter what firmware you are using: stock firmware or my build. It is one minute to check... Known problem and known solution.

Yes try it, I'm curious. It didn't help in my case (I had CRC errors on every port) and I've since replaced it with a different make and model. Currently it's just a brick in my home.

BUT the Dev-Team want to see the error a second time via remotesession.

Ok, will show them again, what happens.

Hopefully this time they get their hands on it.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

Ok, the week is over and there is no beta.

But i hope that germans biggest and most reliable computer magazin "ct" will write about the problem. They confirmed the error i described to them as well. Netgear should try to wake up!

The Beta has arrived!

I am testing right now and for the first 10GBytes everything looks fine.

Will go on with tests for the next days. Hopefully the bug is fixed.

And not to forget to thank the devs!

Re: Nighthawk R7800 CRC Errors Copying Large Files

Ok, the news for this subject: Netgears Beta-Firmware was fine, the new official Firmare-Image on their website is buggy again!

Yesterday i tested the new official firmware-image 1.0.2.68 and got the same errors as before. Only the beta-firmware i got from the netgear devs is working fine in accesspoint-mode.

Maybe they have a problem with their compile & build-server or using other sources for developing as for compiling the official images.

Everyone who needs the beta for tests pls write a short note and i will mail it.

Regards Jens

Thanks for the update, that means I can wait a bit longer. To bad Netgear doesn't communicate this well enough.
