Parental Controls on Guust Network R6700

I have installed a Nighthawk 6700 in a shelter for homeless veterans,  We set up the device using the main networks for the staff, and the Guest networks for the clients (who need a password).  We put Parental Controls in place on the router to block a variety of activity including peer-to-peer networking, but they are still getting nasty-grams from the internet provider saying someone is using their internet to download copywritten material via torrent. The controls do seem to work for the main wifi because the staff has complained on several occasions about not being able to get to certain sites it would block. Now I'm wondering if the Parental Controls even applies to the Guest networks.  Can anyone confirm that the OpenDNS-based Parental Controls apply to both normal and guest networks?

Thanks,

Tom

PS, new user so sorry if a repeat.  I tried hard to find an answer first...

Hi @IT4Causes,

Welcome to the community!

1. What is the firmware version of the router?

2. Yes, the LPC (Live Parental Controls) feature does include the guest network.

3. LPC will work on browsers which may exclude torrent clients.

Re: Parental Controls on Guust Network R6700

Hi Dexter,

We were able to figure it out.  The Parental Controls are working on both networks.  We checked the top 21 torrent sites from https://www.lifewire.com/top-torrent-sites-alternatives-to-kat-2483512 and found that they were all blocked except ExtraTorrent, so we put in a Blacklist entry for https://extratorrent.si/.

Is there a way to suggest updates to OpenDNS so they block this P2P site for others?

Do you have any other suggestions for how to ensure more movie download sites are blocked so we can ensure there are no illegal movie downloads occurring on our network?

Thanks for your reply!

Tom

Hi @IT4Causes,

You can check the link below for domain tagging on the OpenDNS servers.

https://community.opendns.com/domaintagging/

Other than manually identifying and putting in the domains you want to be blocked, you can look into the Block Services feature of the router to block common ports being used by peer t o peer services. This link may help.
