Good wired speed but poor wifi speed - Nighthawk RAX120 AX6000

Hi,

RAX120v2 firmware V1.2.9.52

I replaced my old (but reliable) AC1900 R7000 router for a newer RAX120 AX6000 around a year ago.  I have two wired connections to my office laptop and son's gaming rig and these are fine, I get the maximum I pay for with virgin media M250.  However for wifi I get only 20-30 Mbps for with my phone and laptop and this is when I am right next to the router! 🤔

Am I missing something? Should I turn on QoS?  I have changed the 2.4 channels from 1 to 6 to 11 but no luck. Considering going back to the R7000 as I am sure that was faster for wifi. 🙄

Maybe u can try to reset the router then test again

I assume that virgin media M250 is the speed you pay for. How does the Internet get to you? What modem.gateway/ONT sits between the world and the RAX120v2?

At those Internet speeds, QoS is best left off.

5 GHz should be faster than 2.4 GHz, especially at close range.

You could put the R7000 into Access Point mode and then plug it into the RAX to see if it really is any faster. 

As @duhuf suggests, there is no harm a reset.

The factory reset is more a "witchcraft" move than a technically informed solution, but it does seem to fix problems, especially on the wifi front. It is also the first thing that Netgear support will recommend.

You could backup our settings before taking the plunge.

Then you can recover if things go pear shaped.

Before you go through the default reset process, suggest you connect your phone and laptop to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band.  Also suggest you use the Ookla stand alone application for testing throughput.  Avoid using a web browser and web address.  They just a layer of variable depending on the browser and address.

Nothing there should get in the way of how the router works.

At least you don't have a nasty BT/EE box that makes it impossible to put it into modem only mode.

yes.by the way,have you using dual band in one mode?i suggest u to connect the independent 5g frequency band.because 2.4g/5g band ssid wifi cannot get the fastest wifi speed

My experience is that it depends on the WiFi clients. They go for the "best" signal. If 5 GHz (or even 6 GHz if your router supports it) is strong enough, the client will connect to that.

2.4 GHz is slower but has a longer range, so clients may switch from one to the other as you move around. Most of my 5 GHz kit sticks to that, but I have an MK93 Mesh system.

Devices that are 2.5 GHz only will, of course, just connect to that.

Nightawrk mk93 meh system is quite good i also have the same one,but the only problem is, when the mesh system has running a long time,it will be very warm,so do u know how to solve that?

That is not my experience. My MK93 system is always on and hardly breaks a sweat. I do ensure that the router and satellites have breathing space around them.
