Xbox will not connect via ethernet

I've been dealing with this for a few months and have finally got sick of WiFi only gaming...

I am able to connect Xbox to the router via WiFi, but not via ethernet.  Has anyone been able to solve this issue?

When I plug in via ethernet, the Xbox connects for a slight second but then says that it cannot connect.

Here's the list of things I've tried...

-Reboot router

-Factory reset router

-Restart the xbox a million times

-Changed ethernet cables

-Connect xbox DIRECTLY to modem (and it worked!)

The last thing that I tried was connecting the Xbox DIRECTLY to the modem (bypassing the router) and it worked!  It held a stable connection well.  There has to be something wrong at the router level...

Could there be an issue with the latest firmware?  Or a setting that I need to adjust?

Please help!  Thank you!

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

To close the loop on this one...  I did not find a solution to getting the Netgear router working via ethernet with my Xbox.

I purchased an ASUS router to test and it worked perfectly with the out of the box settings.  So I'm just going to stick with the new router.

Obviously not the solution I (or Netgear community) would be hoping for 😕

Anyone need an RAX80?! lol

1. what modem do you have?

2. what router do you have?

3. what firmware is on the router?

4. What error do you get when hardwired into the router on the xbox during setup?

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Thanks for your reply @plemans .  My responses below

1. what modem do you have?   Metronet standard modem (not sure of p/n)

2. what router do you have?   Nighthawk AX8 RAX80

3. what firmware is on the router?    v1.0.10.140

4. What error do you get when hardwired into the router on the xbox during setup?    The xbox will read that it's connected but the NAT Type will be stuck at "Getting info..." and then the connection fails.  It tries for about 5 seconds and then says "Not Connected" like there is no hardwire connection.

Then it basically goes into a loop of attempting to connect every 30ish seconds.  I was able to get a capture of what it looks like for those 5 seconds when attempting to connect.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Look at the metronet modem and get a model number.

Xbox/playstations don't like double nat's a whole lot and can struggle to connect at times.

So finding out what that modem/gateway is, will be important.

Here's a pic of it.  I don't have time to dismount it from the wall but can do it later if you want to see the back.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Looks like standard nokia ONT.

A couple things to try.

When its connected to the router via ethernet, re-run the network setup assistant in xbox

Make sure ipv6 is enabled on the router.

make sure armor/parental controls, access controls are disabled on the router.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

I enabled ipv6 and did the diagnostics.  The error message changed to saying that UPnP was failing.  I enabled UPnP and it looked like it connected for a minute but then dropped again.

Then it said that it can't get a "Teredo IP address" and to restart the router.

I restarted the router, and I'm basically back to square one.  I'll do the tests and it will connect fully with open NAT for like 15 seconds and then will drop.  I did the test a few times and this error came up.

"The test was interrupted.  The network changed while we were running our test.  Check your router or network connections and try again"

It keeps connecting every 15-30 seconds and then drops.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Could always try putting the xbox's ip address into the router's dmz. Seems to be one of the options Microsoft recommends for the issue.

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/connect-network/upnp-not-successful#:~:text=Res....

Or try port forwarding/port triggering

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

I followed the steps here to add the Xbox IP to the router DMZ

https://kb.netgear.com/1118/How-do-I-configure-a-device-to-be-in-the-DMZ-on-my-NETGEAR-router

I also created port forward rules for this list per this forum

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/connect-network/network-ports-used-xbox-live

  • Port 88 (UDP)

  • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)

  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

  • Port 80 (TCP)

  • Port 500 (UDP)

  • Port 3544 (UDP)

  • Port 4500 (UDP)

No overall changes.  It still attempts to connect about every 30 seconds, then drops off.

Any other suggestions?

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

One other strange thing that I noticed is that the Xbox device does not populate in my "Wired" Device Manager in the Nighthawk app.

If it's plugged in and connecting (on and off) why would the device not exist in the Device Manager?

Also, for testing... I unplugged the ethernet and re-connected on WiFi.  The XBOX showed up in Device Manager under WiFi when I connected that way.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Question, on the RAX router under the Advanced Tab/Internet section box, does the IP address show up as a 192 or 172 or 10 IP address or does it show a ##.##.###.### address?

When you configured PF rules, did you disable uPnP?

I recently had my RAX80 online for a bit a couple of weeks ago. Saw no xbox issues. I'll put it back on and check it again.

What xbox model do you have? Series X?

What happens if you hold the front power button in until it shuts off, then release the button, then press and released to turn it back on?

The settings right now are Get Dynamically from ISP for the IP and the DNS

When you configured PF rules, did you disable uPnP?    UPnP is enabled currently

What xbox model do you have? Series X?   I have two actually that I can test. Both have the same issue as described.   I have the Xbox One X, and the Xbox Series S

What happens if you hold the front power button in until it shuts off, then release the button, then press and released to turn it back on?   Same issues...  I've power cycled, restarted, even factory reset the Xbox Series S when I got it recently.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Ok. If the RAX is getting a 192 address on the WAN port, means the ISP ONT has a router built in. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers
https://kb.netgear.com/24086/How-do-I-set-up-a-default-DMZ-server-on-my-Nighthawk-router
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-WIFI-6-AX-AND-Wi-Fi-6E-AXE/Procedure-for-Factory-reset-of-RBS8...
Try option #2 first...

Remove the PF and DMZ configuration for the xbox from the RAX router and leave uPnP enabled on the RAX router.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

@FURRYe38  I might have mislead you... is this what you meant?  Both are set to get dynamically from ISP

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

@FURRYe38  when Metronet installed I wasn't given any access to configure the Modem.  I guess I'll have to reach out to them to see how to access it.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Also something to test as well, under Advanced Tab/Setup/WAN Setup, set the NAT Filter to OPEN. If you have more than one xbox online at the same time, you'll need to set thie to OPEN so all console get OPEN NAT status.

No, thats the basic tab. I was asking about the Advanced Tab and the Internet section seen there.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

@FURRYe38  In the Advanced section under Internet Port, I'm actually getting a 100. IP number.  Subnet is 255

NAT filter is confirmed OPEN

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Ok.

Internet Port should be a public IP address then. I'd confirm with the ISP that the ONT is in fact bridged or passing thru a public IP address to the RAX80. And not a private IP address.

I connected my RAX80 and got my two Xboxes connected. Both with OPEN NAT. Ethernet connected. CAT6
RAX80 is connected to a CM3000 cable modem here. Public IP address on the RAX80.

NAT Filter set to OPEN. I rebooted the RAX and hard powered OFF both Xboxes. After the RAX was back online, I powered ON the Xbox 1X and it got OPEN NAT.

I had to set a manual port on the Xbox Series X, then set it to OFFLINE for a few seconds, then back ONLINE, then the NAT status changed to OPEN.

Xbox One Device name is my Xbox One X

Xbox is the Series X.

Re: Xbox will not connect via ethernet

Odd that you couldn't get it working on the RAX80. Wondering if something maybe between the RAX80 and your ISP service that the RAX is not handling properly. Something to try and test if you can. If you have a family member or friend at a different location that has maybe a different ISP service, take the RAX80 there and the game console to see if the problem follows.
