Slow upload speeds from rs700+cm3000

 

  • 2gbit down / 300mb up service plan i am contracted for
  • Comcast tech just left and did a meter-based speed test on the coax line.  the coax line tested at 2300~ down and 480~ upload.  This establishes that the coax is good for the speeds of my contracted plan
  • CM3000 directly connected to a laptop via USB-c to ethernet adaptor gets 980mb (the dongle only supports 1gbit connectivity), and the laptop via the same connection gets 150mb/s~ upload. (its a older laptop... and its a laptop but this establishes a soft control)
  • CM3000 connected to the multi gig port via cat6 to the rs700 test ran both from in the router and the nighthawk app.  Speed test yields solid downloads from 1900 - 2200 mbp/s.  however, the upstream hard walls at 75mbp/s up load this will fluctuate 73,72,75 etc... never past.

 

rs700 is running firmware : 

Firmware Version V1.0.7.86_2.0.82

cm300 is running firmware :

Firmware Version V5.01.02

The US dingle is not reliant as that performs better the the rs700 directly connected to the cm3000 useing the internal speed test to the router. Also all the devices on the Lan (Ethernet) reflect the same 75mbs upload that the rs700 is showing

If Comcast confirms it delivers more than 300mbps for the upload on the cable, the CM3000 + RS700 should be able to get 300mbps upload speeds for the embedded speed test, or at least 150mbps same as the laptop with the USB dongle.

I think we've done this test in our lab. I will check it. Thanks.

Yes I would agree the hardware should support it. 300 is not a huge ask when it's doing the 2k down fine. So yeh the laptop on dingle direct to cable modem sets an atleast minimum to see on the router side of the house. But yeah the techs test meter came back in what we would expect so we know the coax is good so now dealing with firmware or something on the netgear side. I may re do the laptop direct test as well when the isp connection is no longer needed, on a newer nicer laptop with a fresh os image to see if I can even best that first couple of tests directly off the cm3000. Also Comcast certifies the cm3000 at 2.3gps down and 483mbps up

@BH-C more testing completed, 

took tests from the router its self, as well s the laptop ethernet to router, then did tests with laptop direct to cm3000

in both these tests the upload speed aligns, download wont align because the laptop does not have a multi gig port so 1gb exceeds capacity on the down stream

here we can see that the direct to modem had no issues hitting the 355 (plan is only 300 so this over performed)

 

i do not understand the wall that the rs700 seems to be hitting it can clearly handle the down stream, but its not talking upstream, this feels firmware ish to me.  its to late now i need sleep, in the morning i will see if i get different results if i LAG the modem and rs700 together ... like maybe the multi gig port on the cable modem does not have a compatible config with the multi gig internet port on the router

We just ran the test (RS700 + CM3000) today with our Comcast service (2Gbps DS, 300mbps US), and we could constantly got more than 300mbps for US in our test. We used the router's spped test from the Web GUI.

When you used your laptop to run speed test through the modem directly and through the RS700, did you see if the two tests were against the same Ookla server? The screenshot for the test directly going through the modem does not show which server was used.

Can you try the RS700's speed test vs. some other servers? You can choose different servers from the Web GUI:
From the Advanced tab -> Setup group -> QoS Setup menu: (1) click on the "Select Speedtest Server" button first (2) choose a different server from the slection box on the right. Please see the screenshot below. Please try a few other servers.

 

Besides, when you connected the laptop to the CM3000, did you use the same Ethernet cable that was used to connect the RS700 to the CM3000? Let's make sure the same cable is used.

So i have two cables involved isolated for the testing purposes, i have the cat6 flat black cable that shipped with the rs700 and i have the yellow cat5e STP that shipped with the CM3000.  i have tested both cables one at a time direct to the cm300 and got the expected test results on the laptops of the roughly 950* down / 300 up as expected (*i only have a 1gb dongle but this is a test of upstream, down stream as that is happy).

 

I conducted three sets of tests this took a couple of hours 

i pulled all the serverID's from the QOS test page interface and wrote a quick batch file to run speedtest.exe at the CLI so i could export results

I ran the batch file on the laptop under two connections

Direct to CM300

Direct to RS700 via port 4

the router does not have a CLI so i ran each server location manually and transposed to excel

 

from these results we can see that the direct connect regardless of the serverid gets the expected upstream performance

we can then see that when the rs700 is involved the upstream performance drops regardless of if its on router testing or on laptop testing the results are nearly the same (a suspicious consistent 4mbps tax on the laptop connected to rs700 vs rs700 on appliance test 74 vs 70)

 

*the router based test doesnt give nearly the details that the CLI test on the laptop gives hence the white spots

*a couple of the test servers seemed to have cripped when hit with a 2gbps load but this is kind of expected and does not changes the findings of the upstream

You happen to have a different router that you could test and compare with? 

 

I'd ask about an RMA and see if this would observe same thing at the router.

Can you get a CAT6A STP cable in between the CM modem, RS and your USB dongle as well?

i do have another 3foot cat6 that i picked up to test with but plan on returning, 5e is rated for 300mbit anyway so thats not it.  but yes i have multiple cables.  but the two cables have both been validated to get the desired speeds when direct to cm3000 

 

i am still in the return period for a few more days with the rs700 with best buy however,.... eh i dont know if this is RMA or if this is config this feels more like config vs malfunction but i could be wrong.  

 

i still have my rbr50 that i could hookup after hours but thats not apples to apples ie firmware issue with the rs700 vs the rbr50 could be fine but i will run that test this evening

If you can, let us know the results with the RBR50. 

If your in the return period with best buy, might ask them if you can try another RS. Seems like this points to something happening with the current RS.

even for being older gear the rbr50 had zero issues hitting 350~mbps (it does not support past 1gb hence the 927) up both on laptop and via web admin console

further indicating that the rs700 has something going on with it, i would hate to think that its actually bad hardware

Ok, great comparison test. 

Ya, seems like something happening with the RS. I'd try another RS from best buy. 

@BH-C said testing there's didn't produce this on there unit so, kind of pointing to your unit being the problem. Trying another should reveal a difference.

im out side of the lunch window to keep testing but the last thing i tested was flow control on / off on all ports no change in performance observed

 

im really reluctant to swapping out, want to see if their is more test or debut etc...

So looks you enabled QoS previously when the upstream speeds were about 70-80mbs, not boosted to 300mbps yet. Wen you enable QoS, it locks the max speeds based on what you entered or based on the speed test results at that time.

Now with 2Gbps DS / 300mbps US condition, you can enable QoS again and then you should be able to get 300mbpds US speeds even when QoS is enabled.

yeh so issues with the modem as well previously so story time

 

when we moved in years ago our speeds where trash, comcast put a amp in, things got better.... then 3-4~ years ago we had more issues, so they ran a new underground line........ fast forward

 

cm3000 - indicating powerlevels are to high, and that their is no locks on upstream OFDMA channels

i deleted the amp, this allowed for OFDMA locks however downstream power was still to high (the techs indicated that those amps didnt have the spectrum to support docsis 3.1 so the ofdma spectrum just gets dropped

and with the decrease of down stream power the ofdma locks went from 36 to 42.5 - it was at this point when the modem was then testing direct connect at 100% but the rs700 was still testing poor as well as all client machines

 

@BH-C so now the next theory to test is the thought that speed tests being ran where not updating the QOS limits well it was enabled and that testing with no ofdma locks got hard coded in to the qos config at 75, but disabled and re enable should re read in the test results?  if this is the case that feels like a defect where qos limits are not dynamically updating on test runs thus needing to disable/re-enable.  i would think that should be dynamic

now the next think and ill do more testing on this now that i know cable modem and router are running proper now i can work down the stream i need to figure out why devices connected via my insight managed switches (gc510p) are testing like this 

 

 

(ill most likely create a new thread once i have some testing done)

Power needs to come down a bit more I believe, should be between +7dbm and -7dbm.

 

 

Please post the event logs from the mode as well.

right correct, yeh i tried to post before and after and it told me 'access denied' and double posted the before

 

here is after deleting the amp fromt he line and adding a splitter that has a -7dbmv tax
